Discourse Communities
FIRST DRAFT

Intro: Discourse Community: never heard of before this assignment.
Really interesting concept
Involved in so many different discourse communites
College student, marketing major, field hockey player
In each community so important to know and understand the language and common functions of the group.

Marketing Discourse Community- most simply defined as “The management process through which goods and services move from concept to the customer. “ from business dictionary.
Marketers use common language
For example, 4 p’s of marketing: something used everyday and defines marketing.
Learned the first day of intro to marketing class.
Outsiders would not know what the 4 p’s are.

For different discrouse communities there needs to be places they can all unite and come together to discuss their field
Site I used was by a professional orginazation BMA
BMA: The Business Marketing Association (BMA) is a professional association for business-to-business marketing professionals. It began in 1922 as the National Industrial Advertising Association. BMA now has more than 2,200 members in 22 chapters in the US.

This BMA site is a place where marketers all over the world meet too:
Get information
Share information
Become a member
Find speakers
Learn about events
Use resources and forums and current buzz
Promotiong “Blaze” global marketing put on by BMA
They say “Our board believes b2b marketing is entering a new golden age, with marketers dealing with change (thus, opportunity) at blazing speed and being asked to take on bigger roles to help blaze paths to greater collaboration, customer focus and growth.”

Can tell about this community they are very into getting better and getting more information:
VERY interesting for a marketing site it is very straightforward and neutral
Not a big production and eye catching like marketing is known for
To me this tells me they are very business like in this site and want to learn and communicate.

Everyone belongs to various communities, but one type of community that many people don’t recognize is discourse communities. Discourse communities may be difficult to identify and pick out, but thankfully, author John Swales outlines the necessary criteria needed to be considered a discourse community. Swales says, “The concept of discourse community is proposed as a more functional and goal-directed grouping than either speech community or speech fellowship” (Swales 211). He then goes on to give us six qualities that describe what a discourse community should have: common public goals, methods of communication, providing information and feedback to one another, discourse expectations, specialized terminology, and a rank and change membership. American linguist…

Common Public Goals, one of the six characteristics for a discourse community, are the goals or purposes that the discourse community strives to accomplish and uses communication to fulfill those purposes. They provide an outline for public goals that members who agree might join the community and express their opinions on those ideals and goals. As a professor of Astronomy at Sacramento State, Dr. Taylor’s goal is to have students like science; he believes that the sciences are under appreciated and would like to spread his knowledge and interest to his classes through his lectures. He hopes that the enthusiasm he displays in classes will spark enthusiasm in students as well and get them to pursue careers in the fields of sciences. Researchers…

At the beginning of my high school days when I was a freshman or “fish” as the upperclassmen would call us, I never knew where I really belonged. Every clique or group that I tried to become a part of did not truly fit my personality. Just like the upperclassmen had said, I felt like a small fish in an even bigger sea. It all changed when one day a pep rally was held in honor of our first football game of the season. As I sat in the rickety bleachers and watched the cocky football players walk out followed by the overly-spirited cheerleaders, I sat back in dismay. But then following the cheerleaders,…

The On-Site property manager is accountable for property operations, overseeing and enhancing the value of the property. Community Managers must embrace the concepts of Level 5 Leadership, Group Responsibility and Servant Leadership. The purpose for a property manager is to well manage and coordinate persons, activates, and available resources in order to accomplish community objectives as set forth by the Regional Property Manager and property owner. They must report their District/Regional Manager. Has a property manager you have to supervise the entire on-site staff (Assistant Community Manager/ Bookkeeper, Leasing Coordinator, Leasing Consultant, Community Service Supervisor/Assistant Community Service Supervisor, Service Technician, Make-Ready Technician, Groundskeeper, Painter, and Housekeeper.) This job has other responsibilities such as: meeting financial goals, leasing housing, administrating the property, resident retention, keeping up with maintenance, and making sure safety is enforced. A person in this occupation must conduct all business in accordance with TMI polices and procedures. I took a journey through my mother’s occupation as an On-Site Property Manager. She has been in this field for almost 5 years. I guess that would make her and old timer in her job. In order to be in this field all she had to have was a high diploma and a lot of people skills. She has to attend a yearly training program. That's good because the learning never stops in the occupation. Any person going into this field has to know the meaning of HUD (Housing Urban Development) and RD (Rural Development). You also have to read the Louisiana Fair Housing policies and procedures. My mother says she chose this field because it allows her to put her business management classes to good use. She enjoys her job because it gives her a chance to display her leadership qualities and she loves being in charge of a large group of people. When asked,” What advice would she give a new comer…

ENGL 1301 is a broad and informative class, even only being in it for a few week I am already learning a lot. For example, these first few weeks of class I have been learning about the importance of the logos, pathos, and ethos appeals that are so important to the masterdom of the rhetorical situation. With these appeals a writer such as I, will be able to convince this class of my success in joining the discourse community of animal shelter volunteers. A discourse Community is a community of people who share not only knowledge about specific shared topics but also similar backgrounds, values, and share a common language. I will prove in this paper that I successfully entered one of these discourse communities and was accepted by showing my…

When companies market (company A) their products to other business (Company B), they are looking to build a lasting business relationship. Company B is marketing their product and services because they know and understand what the company will need in order to operate more efficiently. When companies make purchases, it is a multi-step process that involves executive decisions and planning, company financial review (depending on the amount of the purchase), and possible sales meetings to offer demonstrations of new products (Business Marketing Association, n.d.). B2B marketing is to convert prospects into customers and build a lasting business relationship; they need to focus on relationship building and communication using marketing activities that generate leads that can be nurtured during the sales cycle (Murphy, 2007).…

Over the past two decades, B2B marketing has emerged as a discipline in the marketing literature but unfortunately it has never received much attention of researcher’s community because of misconceptions about B2B concepts.
