Before we dive too deep into this subject, the term spanking may need to be defined. The definition of spanking is different to each person. The one that will be used throughout this paper is from Merriam Webster. To strike, especially on the buttocks with an open hand. This means that spanking does not include using a belt on a child, or a paddle. Spanking also means no permanent physical damage was sustained during the encounter. If damage is sustained, then it becomes abuse, which is a serious crime and should not be taken lightly. The line between abuse and punishment will be discussed in depth later in the essay. No…

Some parents that are against spanking have good reasons as to why they choose not to spank their children. For instance, according to studies that were done at the University of Manitoba, Canada, two to seven percent of patients seen for mental disorders were linked to physical punishment as a child. “Individuals who are physical punished have an increased likelihood of having mental health disorders” (Afifi, 2012). Few parents agree that corporal punishment is a type of child abuse. When used properly and in the correct circumstances, spanking can be an effective form of punishment. A spanking that is received when a parent is calm, rather than when the parent is angry and quick to action is more controlled and stable (Spank or Not to Spank). Verbal punishment can be more harmful than physical ones. Being verbally assaulted can cause self-esteem or emotional issues (When Parents Lift Their Hands). Corporal punishment is a violation inflicted on children, teachers, and others in names of “discipline” which is experienced by a large majority of children in many states worldwide. Spanking has become a debatable topic for decades. Some people are in support of it, while others are against it. According to the Farlex dictionary “spanking is defined as a number of slaps on the buttocks delivered in a rapid succession as for punishment.” In reality Spanking should not be considered as a child abuse. It should only be considered an abuse based on how it is issued. Parents are not supposed to beat their child on the head or in the face. If that happens, it will cause injury to the child, which will be termed as an abuse. First of all, it is not any parent will to develop hatred towards his or her own child, but it is the behavior of the kids that will lure their parents to beating them. There are certain kids who are so difficult in a way that, no amount of words or other punishment can stop them whenever they are doing something bad. Their parents…

According to the law, parents legally have the right to spank their children, but they also have certain limitations under which circumstances it is acceptable to whip their kids. Considering the fact that paddling in schools is still legal in 23 states, this law has many variations. As experts further gather and study information about children’s psychological and physical development, more controversy arises on whether parents have the right to beat their kids or not. I believe spanking is a tool used to discipline children that should be classified as corporal punishment; therefore parents should not be able to spank their children.…

Parents have different ways of punishing their child. Anything from grounding them from things, making them do extra chores, time outs and spanking them. The most effective of these, is spanking. In a research project by Marjorie Gunnoe, “children who were spanked between the ages of 2 and 6 grew up to be happier and well-adjusted as teenagers.” Spanking a child is not abuse. It is a means of punishment. You should only use your hand to spank your child. Showing your child they have done wrong, by spanking, will teach them to not do what it is that they did, again. You should never use a belt, shoe, switch, or any other foreign object. Those would be considered weapons, and that would be child abuse. Spanking is not a hateful means of punishment. It shows the child they have done wrong and need to be punished. It is an effective means of punishment. Children learn not to do the same wrong again. A child will grow up “happier and well-adjusted” by spanking them.…
