This lab report is on the trip to Montara beach were we studied sediments on the coast line. In figure 1 it shows the location of Montara beach, which is located south of San Francisco near Pacifica. The purpose of the trip was to discover layers of sediment and understand the properties of them, like grain size, composite, organization and so forth. As shown in figure 2 you can see that Montara beach has quaternary sediment, meaning its sediment is younger than what its surround by. This data helps geologist determine how old the rock is and what kind of geological events have occurred to it and near it. The observations of modern processes helps to interrupt ancient events by examining the sediment and looking at the way it was deposited to show where the sediment was once from and what it will from to later on. (Figure1 & 2)…

“Although the material held in solution by the water of the Gulf of Mexico is not found in combination as salts, such as produced on evaporation, but rather in the form of ions, the basic elements and the acid radicals being separated, nevertheless it is customary and convenient to consider them as combined into the form of salts. Among these, common salt, or sodium chloride, makes up the bulk of the material, being nearly 78 percent of the total mass of salt, or over 27 mille (thousand) of the salinity (which is taken as 35 in round numbers). In the accompanying table the composition of sea water salts is given in the form of such combinations, together with the permillage of each in normal seawater, and the number of short tons in a cubic mile of sea water.”…

The claim has been made that understanding trace fossils will help scientists understand the water ecosystem in the Jurassic Terrestrial time period. To understand marine deposits, scientists must look for vertebrate fossils, plant body, as well as trace fossils. This causes scientists to dig deeper in their research on fossils, which leads to motivation to discover more. By actively researching and understanding the trace fossils and their use of the water ecosystem, scientists can understand the role of the water ecosystem back in the Jurassic Terrestrial time period. In Continental Trace Fossils as the Key to Understanding Jurassic Terrestrial and Freshwater Ecosystem, scientists study and research termites, bees and their hives, and crayfish.…

    Four Geological Eras

These one-celled organisms helped to make the air and water around the Earth full of oxygen, forming new life. Next, photosynthetic organisms became part of Earth by using carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and releasing oxygen. The last life form to develop in this era were simple soft bodied animals, since soft bodies do not have vertebrates there are not many fossils as evidence from this era. Scientists know that one-celled organisms, photosynthetic organisms, and soft bodied animals were the first species on earth by the following information, “The amount of C-14 in any sample of carbon containing material can be found by measuring the level of radioactive decay, and comparing that with the decay rate observed in a carbon sample exposed to the continual mixing at the surface of the earth of C-12 and C-14 produced in the upper atmosphere. Using the ratio of C-14 to total carbon, one can determine the age of the sample.” As a culmination, carbon dating, examining index fossils, and using relative dating reveal to scientists the milestone of the first organisms in the Precambrian…

The Grand Canyon, with its many layers of sediment, tells a story as old as 2 billion years. Chronologically, the layers fallow the Law of Superposition (youngest rocks on top, oldest on bottom). In toltal one would see 9 distinctive layers that give us evidence to how and what was going on millions of years ago.…
