Difference Between Bent And Broke
I think the difference between bent and broke is that one who is bent is still capable of doing evil, a broken one cannot do any evil anymore because they are broke (they can only do good). Oyarsa says that Weston is bent but Devine is broken. Weston has been bent because of his high ideals and love for humanity were made to serve evil. For example, killing the “savage” beasts on Malacandra in order to take it over so that mankind can colonize it. Additionally, he does not see these things as evil, it is almost as if he has no conscience. Oyarsa explains that he needs curing before he can properly take part in civilized life. Weston spoke harshly towards Oyarsa who simply wanted to know why he wanted Malacandra. He went on to explain that whenever his earth died man would come to Malacandra and then when that planet died they would go on …show more content…
But then Weston shouts, "You say your Maleldil let all go dead. Other one, Bent One, he fight, jump, live—not all talkee-talkee. Me no care Maleldil. Like Bent One better: me on his side." In this case, the bent one is Satan, so Weston proclaims that he is on the side of Satan and he is willing to do whatever it takes to prolong the life of man. The “bent one” used to be the Oyarsa of earth until he rebelled. He became bent before any forms of life existed on earth, and his goal was to take over other worlds other than his own. A great war took place in which the people of Malacandra drove the “bent one” out of the heavens and bound him in his own world, and to this day he remains there. This is very similar to the story of Lucifer in the Bible. Lucifer became jealous of God and His power so God cast him out of heaven into his own world. However, just like satan, the “bent one” is still capable of causing sin and bending people. Devine is broken because he is wholly driven by an evil desire:

As the hero’s journey comes near to an end every character must cross the return threshold. Both Satan in Paradise lost and Winston in Nineteen Eighty-Four manage to sabotage their own fate into the wasteland. Satan crosses the return threshold when he sabotages Eve after he ruined his own chances as God’s most highest Arcangel. During this endeavour satan finally succumbs to the shadow, which according to Carl Jung resides as the dark side of one’s inner personality. Through Satan’s malicious transgressions, God punishes him and the fallen angels in the permanent form of a serpent, while granting a chance of salvation to humanity who Satan cast potential damnation on.…

This passage makes me feel sad because of the sudden death of Liesel. As a result, this prompts me into realizing that one of theme of this book is about how life is unpredictable. An example of this is when Liesel dies without warning. I can relate to this theme because a friend of mine from elementary has committed suicide and none of her friends knew until her parents posted a post on Facebook declaring that she has died. Therefore, I've learned that cherishing the people around me is important as they might die without warning, like…

That was the reflection that made you creepy all over. It was impossible — it was not good for one either - trying to imagine. He had taken a high seat amongst the devils of the land - I mean literally." (pg. 109)…

While Satan’s humane emotions were demonstrated earlier in the narrative, his soliloquy further explicates the complexity of his thoughts. Throughout the first few books, Satan does not demonstrate any vulnerabilities. He is glorified as an obstinate and prideful Spirit who surpasses all others in Hell and who knows exactly what he yearns. Though Satan’s abilities are of no question, this one-sided view of Satan – that he is a competent and powerful devil – appears lacking; therefore, the demonstration of Satan’s vulnerability in his soliloquy is a progression in his character development. Satan finally senses “horror and doubt,” and is drenched in grief by his “remembrance from what state [he] fell” (4:17, 38-39). This is the first time Satan is described to have self-doubt, and specifically, in…

He wants to destroy all men and take control over the man’s family. So, he (the devil) encourages compromise over courage. He wants to see men distracted by the “gusto” a man gets after a slightly chilled draft; by advocating pride over obedience; by whispering deceit into the man’s ear, such as; “your Pastor will never know that your mission trip is the cover-up for an excursion with your assistant ministry leader (your wife’s sister). Further, the devil puts his hands over your eyes and leads you to destruction. He enjoys men abusing their positions as ministry leaders. So he (the devil) is satisfied when a ministry…

Before The Fall, Adam and Eve existed together as one in the Garden of Eden, but soon their unity began to dismantle throughout the course of Paradise Lost (Sims 1). Tempted by the lavish fruit from The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, Eve is persuaded to take a bite of the fruit by Satan, God’s second in command, who is now the leader of fallen angels. Then Adam, lead on by Eve, took a bite as well, which lead to The Fall of humanity. But this whole experience is different; the temptation by Satan is not felt, but linked second-hand. The original meaning of The Fall is that it was Eve’s fault, but in Paradise Lost Milton places the blame on Adam.…

The tone displayed in the speech fulfills a dramatically desolate tone which aids the crowd in realizing the feelings that are being expressed by Wolsey. Since he has just been the victim of a unforeseen event he feels alone and sees no hope in his life. During his speech he makes a remark to try to illustrate the experience he states: “and when he falls, he falls like Lucifer, never to hope again.” The reference to Lucifer, or Satan, gives off the feeling of death which works well to make his point of which he feels that there is no point to life anymore. Satan is known for his affiliation with evil. The fact that Wolsey associates his reign as advisor with an evil character such as Lucifer portrays that he doesn’t see life in the same way he did before. He feels as though his downfall was not an act of justice.…

Mary Shelley begins her novel with a well-known quote from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, “Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay/ To mold me Man,/ did I solicit thee from darkness to promote me?” This rhetorical question made by Adam, a creation of God, epitomize the creatures feelings toward his creator, Victor Frankenstein. The creature is comparing himself as to both Adam and Lucifer, or Satan, as he is shunned and left in abandonment by his own creator, though he strives to be good. Because of the isolation and loneliness that the creature had to deal with, it caused him to turn evil and eventually, into a murderer. Eventually, it also led to Victor Frankenstein’s ruin in attempt to rid humanity of the creature when ironically, was for humanity in the first place. This reveals man’s attempt to play God, to create life from nothingness, can lead to horrible results.…

In the biblical account of “the fall”, the dialogue shared between Satan and Eve is less developed and vague in detail than that of Milton’s tale. Satan’s approach of Eve is much more upfront and less personal in meaning. He quickly takes hold of the topic of the “forbidden fruit”. His character is shown with a much shallower depth of knowledge towards Eve. He uses a more 2-dimesional approach to tempt Eve to eat from the tree that God has forbidden her and Adam to eat from. He is shown to have a lack of cunning, and directly disproves and belittles Eve’s fears of eating from the tree with a lack of creativity and slyness. As the story continues, Eve is finally won over by temptation and eats from the tree. The story is left at that moment.…

This, however, differs from the stereotypical depiction of Satan in Hell by making Satan appear more like a monster rather than the angel he once was. Dante sees Satan positioned, “from his mid-breast forth… three faces on his head… underneath each came forth two mighty wings, such as befitting were so great a bird,” (Canto 34). As Satan tries to move and escape, the more he flaps his bat-like wings, he stays more frozen and it only gets more cold in circle…
