Dietary Supplements Report
In this paper, I will define dietary supplements. I will also describe some benefits of taking dietary supplements. I will describe some risks of taking dietary supplements. I will explain the government regulations surrounding dietary supplements. Finally, I will choose a health condition and I will discuss a condition-specific supplement used to treat and manage the aliment. I will also discuss the supplements implications, dosages, and risks for treating the condition.
Dietary supplements are products intended for ingestion as supplements to the diet. Dietary supplements may contain vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals (Grosvenor, 2006). This label is a standard label similar to the Nutrition Facts label for foods and also usually has the words dietary supplement on the label (Grosvenor, 2006). The FDA has authority to collect information on supplement safety and they are able to remove a product from the market if the FDA can prove that the product carries significant risk (Grosvenor, 2006). For example, the FDA exercised its right to remove products containing Ephedra from the market place (Grosvenor, 2006). The FDA found that products with Ephedra were linked to one hundred-fifty-five deaths and dozens of heart attacks and strokes (Grosvenor, 2006). The FDA has also found other ingredients to be hazardous and asked that they voluntarily remove the ingredients. Although the FDA is able to set regulations surrounding dietary supplements there are no mandatory standards in manufacturing supplements therefore the amount of an ingredient in a dietary supplement and how well it is absorbed in a person’s body varies from dose to dose (Grosvenor,
