Diary entry from Pip’s point of view.

Dear Diary,
Today was a new day for me again. I went alone to the churchyard where the tombstones of my parents and my 5 brothers are in the marshes near my house. I live with my sister Mrs Joe Gargery and her husband, Joe Gargery, a blacksmith as a burden as she never likes me and always tells me off for everything. I stayed there near the gravestones until afternoon was returning back home, when I heard a terrible voice which told me to stop. Butterflies stated to fly in my tummy as I stopped and saw him. He was a huge man in some kind of a uniform; I felt it more like a prison uniform. He had iron stuck to his leg and was extremely dirty. He came towards me and picked me and turned me upside down and took a piece of bread which I had kept in my pocket. The huge guy interrogated me and at the end asked me to get a file and a wittle. He also warns me not to tell anybody about him residing in the marshes, otherwise, another person who is accompanying the convict will kill me. I feared him and the other person accompanying him and ran from the spot as fast as I could without bothering to stop or turn behind and see if anybody was following me to my house also, I did not tell anybody about whatever happened in the

In Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations Pip, the boy who gets rich and then lost it all in the end, everybody can relate too in some way. The first way is Pip like everyone else was a kid, at the beginning of the story Pip is a kid that is somewhere around 7-9 years old and gets older as the book continues. The second way is that Pip desires to better himself like everyone does. The final way is Pip desires to win the heart of someone he loves, but this someone hates…

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

I fell off of my horse into the mud, I was bleeding from my neck and side because that is we're I was struck. The novel, Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens is heavily a character-driven novel due to the fact that the sequence of events in the novel are causes and effects of the actions of the characters as well as the interactions between them. The novel mainly depicts the growth and development of an orphan named Pip, who is greatly influenced by the other characters and became a gentleman and a bachelor in the end of the novel through his encounters with the other characters. Pip, as the main character, definitely has a lasting impact on the drive of the novel since his decisions are very instrumental and effective towards the other characters as well as to himself. This phenomenon applies to not only Pip, but to the other characters, especially Estella, Miss Havisham, Joe, and Abel Magwitch. Everything a character does and every encounter between the characters in Great Expectation has an effect on the flow of the plot and situation of the novel.…

Early yesterday morning, I saw that Cecilia Kang at the Washington Post had a story up about the years-long fight for white spaces entitled: Tech, telecom giants take sides as FCC proposes large public WiFi networks. It struck me as odd, because so much in the article seemed... wrong or misleading. The main part about efforts to finally do something with the old TV spectrum isn't anything new at all. We first wrote about the FCC "proposing" this back in 2004 and have covered it a few times since. The FCC has been trying to use some of that TV spectrum for better, more efficient and more useful endeavors. It's been an ongoing battle that feels like it's never going to end. The short version is that TV broadcasters got a ton of free spectrum many years ago (just look at how giant chunks of the spectrum chart belong to TV broadcasters). A big part of the move to digital TV was to force broadcasters to give up a chunk of wasted, valuable spectrum that can be turned into (among other things) some useful wireless services. TV broadcasters hate this and have been fighting it in a variety of ways.…

When I was 8 years old my family and I went to knotts berry farm. Being a small kid the time, I barely reached the height minimum to board. When I got on, I had to share a seat and lap bar with my dad and we didn't put the seat belt on correctly. When the ride started, I could feel me slide around and my body lift off the seat. The whole ride I ended up hugging the lap bar, that wasn't even pushing on my legs, in hopes that I would not fly off the seat. With this experience my mood transformed from being happy and excited to a terrifying life threatening situation. This shows that transformation obviously creates fear. This can be seen in the following 3 stories as well. “The Raven”, “House Taken Over” and “Where is Here” use mood transformation…

We were on trial, I could feel the splinters as I squeezed the quill hard. I had many thoughts in my head, were we going to die, are my family going to be okay, Will I ever see them again, how long until I either drown or get hanged? I squeezed it harder. My father was gone, in a different room to do his trial. I remember! I nearly jump for joy as I remember that all I have to say is that I am guilty. Many have done it before and are still alive. But what if this time is different? I dip it in ink as I write guilty. I see them nod heads. The judge is starting to talk as someone uncuffs me. I am free! I start to walk out, but stop midway like something is wrong. I rush home to find no one is there.…

In chapter XI, Jane explains her restlessness by describing how it is in human nature to find or create action. Jane’s unhappiness with her stagnation at Thornfield begins to wear her down, with no company of her own age or emotional/mental state to help absorb her heat. When the other people of thornfield are engaged in their own personal activities, Jane looks from the attic out towards the horizon longing for “a power of vision which might overpass that limit.” Jane wants to see more, she wants to be able to go into a world that is busy and full of life, somewhere that can tend to her flame instead of simply holding it. Agitation arises from within Jane when she is tranquil. Jane thinks to herself that “human beings” aren’t to be content with “tranquility”.…

Well, it all began with me sitting down with my family at the breakfast table munching on a piece of charred toast and guzzling down some milk, which was the very moment of when I heard the delicate sound of sirens coming from the east end of the street. My father’s face grew faint and my mother rapidly stood up and snatched my hand, as well as my brother’s. She then directed us towards the back of the house through a tiny break in the floor. Once we got to the hole, my mom took my brother’s hand and put it inside mine, telling him to guard me. We were placed into the hole and she smooched our heads and then camouflaged the small light we had with a rug. I began to lose it, oblivious of the imprisonment and demolition that laid before me on a silver tray. My brother and I spent a week in that hole, even though it felt like we had been down there for a life span. For the time being, I thought of my parents and where they went and if they would they come back soon for my brother and I? One day, while we were still in the hole, with muscle spasms building up in my legs, I heard footsteps coming from above my head. My brother, praying that it was our parents coming back to rescue us from the endless twilight that we were challenged with, slid the rug over and cropped up with scrunched up eyes. The harsh man standing above us, nevertheless, was not our father, but a man I would soon come to know as a Nazi soldier. The logic of our kidnapping was not because of our offense against the law, but because of my religion, my ethnicity, the way I talked and the way I looked.…

I remember 2 years ago, on Christmas Eve, my family and I were woken up by a phone call. It was 3 in the morning, and none of us were expecting a call. My father picked up the phone, and the next thing I saw, was how pale he got. My grandpa had just called, telling my father, that my cousin had just been kidnapped. He was just 13 years old, and was on the wrong place at the wrong time. When my dad told me this, I knew that there wasn’t much to be done, besides giving the kidnappers, the money they were asking for. On the other hand, my dad thought the best idea was to go and tell the police what had happened. That same day, we went to the police station, it was only me and my dad. An officer sent us down to an office, but while we were walking there, my dad’s cellphone rang. He told me to pick it up, and I did as he told me. I answered, and a man told me to get out of the station if we didn’t want anything bad to happen to my cousin. My dad saw how I started shaking and took the phone out of my hands. He answered, and they told him the same thing as they had told me, only this time, they added that there would be someone making sure we didn’t say anything.…
