We hear determination in our everyday lives, no matter our age nor our location. Although we may hear this constantly, determination is something very hard to obtain. Rapunzel is a short story by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The plot of the story is the same as the Disney version we all know and love. Rapunzel’s parents were longing for a child. Through a window, the wife could see a beautiful garden, full of flowers and herbs. She longed for some Rapunzel, which is a parsnip-like root, used like a radish. She tells her husband that if she does not get some of this Rapunzel, she will die. So he climbed the high wall, determined to bring this Rapunzel to his wife. After being successful, she longs for more. Unfortunately, the second time he climbed the high wall, he was caught by the Sorceress. He pleaded his case, saying “"Let mercy overrule justice. When he climbs to the top, Rapunzel is no where to be found, only the Sorceress. She says to him, "You have come for your Mistress Darling, but that beautiful bird is no longer sitting in her nest, nor is she singing any more. The cat got her, and will scratch your eyes out as well. You have lost Rapunzel. You will never see her again." (Rapunzel, para 27) In the end, the prince, blinded, was walking through the forest crying over Rapunzel when he hears her singing, she recognizes him and they hug and start to weep together. Two of her tears fall into his eyes and he may once again see. They live happily together

In Candide, by Voltaire, Candide succeeds in finding Lady Cunegonde only because of his shear determination. He was prepared to do anything and he did everything he could do to get her back. He sold all his jewels, traveled long and hazardous journeys, and even risked his life. His determination makes him do whatever he has to do. His mind was prepared to get to his goal: his motivation evolved from his determination to find his love, and he succeeds in it also. Determination is also seen in athletes and adventurers. Its there determined mind—the decision that they have to win—that takes them to their success. Without determination humans cannot succeed. Determination and ideas play a crucial role in our human condition.…

Everyone will behave differently when they face adversity. Some of them might give up easily, or they fight with their courage instead of accepting adversity and tragedy. In True Notebooks, Mark Salzman shows us how the boys deal with obstacles. If those boys can’t overcome obstacles, obstacles overcome them. Therefore, they must persist in the end when they face adversity. Sometime, some of them are lucky to overcome obstacles by persisting in the end, but many of them can’t overcome obstacles because of the situation, or they don’t even want to overcome obstacles.…

I grab life by the wheel and steer through it with ease. I roar, I screech, I growl. I glide around the road of life. Every morning awake in the shadows of comfort. With minor tweaks to my bodywork I am ready for the day. I turn my key and open the garage, ready to emerge from the shadows of comfort and drive the road of life. For in my life I will see many friends, enemies, and fans. My friends will build me up to become the fiercest car on the track. They will help fix me when I collide with obstacles. My friends will guide me through the road of life. My enemies try to overtake me and pass…
