Descriptive Essay
Sitting at my desk at home, a crushing feeling crept up on me. I didn’t know what to think. I’m not going to make it, am I. It was already midway through junior year of high school, and having just calculated my GPA requirements for many of the colleges I had wanted to go to, I realized that my grades were not even close to what I expected them to be. I guess I had been in denial for so long that I let them slip this far. How could I have let this happen? Where was my mind when I needed to study and do homework? Why did so many stupid things like watching T.V. or going out with friends or just mindlessly waste my time on the internet? I felt an awful combination of disappointment, anger, panic, and frustration. There was no way to fix this in my mind. My future college acceptance letters seemed bleak. What should I do next? After setting up an appointment to see my new college counselor a week later, the worst had not been eradicated, in fact, it was more real than it ever was, and there seemed to be no way of getting out of it. Growing up with my Asian heritage, and living in an Asian dominated community didn’t make things easier either. It is a well-known stereotype that people of Asian culture are notorious for our insane study habits, cutthroat competitiveness, and strict values of academic achievements. If you don’t make it to one of the top 50 schools in the U.S., people begin to look down on you. That being said, everyone at school appeared to be so much smarter, better, and more competitive than me. When my mom found out about my poor grades, I can still remember the look on her face. It’s not a memory I like to remember. She looked so sad and angry with me that all I wanted to do was apologize over and over again and wish that I could disappear. I became paranoid and thought all my friends and everyone from school were judging me and thought things like:

What’s better to chill out a hot summer’s day than something sweet and cool? No, I am not talking about a Popsicle. I am not talking about an ice cream cone, either. I am not even talking about iced tea or lemonade. It is something better than all of those, and it doesn’t even have all the sneaky calories of those other tasty treats! The answer to the question is simple. Have you guessed it? It is a cherry.…

When I was in high school I wasn't a very good student. I really didn't apply myself to anything. I had no dreams of going to college or doing anything special with my life. No one had ever encouraged me to do any better than I was or to try harder. My parents were not college graduates, they both had full time jobs plus nine kids to raise. I knew that there wasn't any money to send me to college, and my guidance counselor never explained to me about financial aid. I graduated, got a job and worked one dead end job after another until I got married and started a family. I spent the next fifteen years raising my daughter and encouraging her education. About a year ago my husband decided he wanted a divorce and I was left wondering; “What am I going to do now?” Since graduation I have regretted not going to college, I have always wanted to work with children, either as a counselor or in social work. My parents suggested that maybe I look into going back to school. I applied at Southern New Hampshire University and I was admitted. My first reaction was that I'm going to fail, I started by taking two classes every eight weeks and to my surprise I didn't fail and I loved it. I had to take some time off to finalize the divorce and when I was mentally ready I applied to Ashford. I started last year thinking that I was going to fail and realized that if I try hard enough I can achieve my goals. I'm not scared of failing anymore, I am however afraid of letting myself down for not trying hard enough, and for me that isn't good enough anymore. I want better for myself and I want to look in the mirror everyday and be proud of who I see.…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

Throughout my entire career as a student, I have put into my mind that I need to do the best I can, so that I can be accepted into a great college and receive scholarships. I worked hard every year so that I could earn great grades to raise my GPA. I am now ranked fourth in my class. I selected challenging and advanced courses , so that I could increase my GPA even more. Every year I took classes that were honors or AP. I chose not to focus on the easy elective options, and instead I chose to take more difficult classes that would help me for the future and that were directed towards my career choice. I took all the medical courses and became a CNA and CMAA my junior year. Usually the CNA class is taken by seniors, but I took this challenging class as a junior and I…

It wasn’t too long before I realized that high school was not just a walk in the park as I anticipated and to be extra serious than what I was. Sophomore year is when I figured this all out and in my Junior year is when I flipped the script. Now I'm striving, working, and improving on my learning to graduate. In my sophomore I wasn’t doing so sound, in I would say the majority of my classes I did fail 2 of my classes when honestly it shouldn’t have happened. The two classes I didn’t pass were English and History. I only didn’t pass these two since I just didn’t proceed to see I should have been more serious and honestly, I was lazy thinking that it was such a breeze that I could just soar through these classes. I occasionally wouldn't ask my…

“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…

As far back as I can remember Thanksgiving was one of my favorites, not for the fall decorations, or the plethora of Football games, but for the food. Ah, the food, when I was a little girl, I used to be awakened by the smell of the savory butter that was melting atop the stove, as I heard the sweet onions being chopped, I knew it was starting; the beginning of the Thanksgiving feast. As I got up and wiped the sleep dust from my eyes, I anxiously ran into the kitchen shouting “Nana, can I help, please Nana?” As my grandmother looked into my sweet brown eyes and replied, “Grab a stool my sweet child, and I’ll get you an apron.” My heartbeat was so loud from the excitement that I thought the neighbors could hear. I raced to the table, grabbed the stool and was anxiously awaiting my assignment. “Julie”, my grandmother stated, “How would you like to help me make the stuffing?” I gasped at the thought to be a part of her infamous stuffing of the delicious bird. “Really Nana, oh my”, I replied with such excitement that I almost fell off the stool. And here it starts, this magical moment, when my grandmother handed me the greenest stalks of celery my eyes ever encountered along with a sharp little paring knife and said “Julie, please be careful as I do not want any fingertips in the stuffing this year.” I looked at her, my eyes full of tears with the excitement of being an integral piece of the compellation and said, “I promise Nana.” As I started to chop the celery into what my grandmother told me were to be “paper-thin” slices I drifted away for a moment, thinking about what it would be like to be a grown-up, having my own Thanksgiving feast.…
