Clearing down the forest for a new mall, or a consumer’s favorite restaurant may catch their attention, but is anyone affected? Deforesting the Amazon may sound like an innovative idea if it brings popular stores to town, or leads to new job opportunities, but these are short term benefits. The long-term costs of deforesting the amazon, global warming, and eradication of plants and animals, far outweigh those benefits. South America's economic growth and native populations do not depend on this, but the rainforest should be protected to reserve the survival of many unique plants and animals.
