Definition Of Health
The definition of health is ‘the state of being free from illness or injury’ (Definition of health, 2013). There are five main components of health including physical, mental, social, environmental and spiritual health. All of these five components have inter-relationships in one way or another and can both positively and negatively impact the well-being of a person. An example of this is the strong link between physical health, spiritual health and mental health. Being physically healthy and exercising does not only improve your mental health but also your social and spiritual health as well. Scientists have proven that poor physical health brings an increased risk of depression, as do the social and relationship problems that can be common …show more content…
In simple terms it is good brain health (Grohol 2008). Many people consider good mental health to be the emotional and psychological well-being where you can cope with normal stresses can work productively and can make a good contribution to their community (Mental health basics, 2011). Mental health describes our social, emotional, and psychological states, all wrapped up into one (Grohol 2008). Staying active and having some daily exercise in your life contributes to good mental health, as does having a good life balance with work and your social life (Grohol 2008). The lack of these things in a person’s life may also lead to poor mental health or mental illness. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2013) states that symptoms of a mental disorder were experienced at some time during a twelve-month period by an estimated 3.2 million people (20% of the population aged between 16 and 24), while 7.3 million (45%) reported a lifetime mental disorder (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2013). Improving mental health means to value and accept yourself (2003 Mind). It is also important to take care of your body, exercise, get plenty of sleep as well as surrounding yourself with good people who care about …show more content…
Your “spirit” usually refers to the deepest part of you, the part that lets you make meaning of your world. Your spirit provides you with the revealing sense of who you are, why you are here and what your purpose is for living. It is that innermost part of you that allows you to gain strength and hope (Thompson Rivers University, 2013). Many wellness behaviours can benefit your spiritual health. Such behaviours include feeling connected with others, feeling part of a community, volunteering, having an optimistic attitude, contributing to society and self –care (Thompson Rivers University, 2013). A lack of spiritual health may lead to negative impacts in a person’s life including a lack of connectedness and sense of belonging which could in turn affect relationships with family and friends and lead to depression. Some ways in which to improve spiritual health include taking time out for yourself, be open with the people around you, be non-judgmental and have an open mind, be receptive to pain or times of sorrow, practice forgiveness and live joyfully (Thompson Rivers University,

Whenever I would think of health and wellness, my mind would always revert back to just being sick or being in shape. I have learned that it is much more to it than just that. Health and wellness is more of being in a state of total social, mental, and physical wellbeing. Factors such as the environment, social life, emotions, spirituality, and physicality all play a role in one’s health. In order to life fully with meaning, these dimensions are a very important part of our health. Physical health deals with body size and shape. Social health is more of how you deal…

If you are missing one of the six I think it affects the other areas of health. I see this with my son who has anxiety and panic attacks, when he has an attack then he is more likely to get sick like with a cold and then it takes him forever to feel his old self again, he says he is never really good. I know for me being spiritual healthy makes it easier for me to be emotionally healthy. I have to be happy and feel good about me with is hard but I am learning it is ok not to be perfect as long as you are happy with your body, mind and soul. I know that I feel all around better when I can work out in some way whether it be working out, working in the garden or taking a walk. It is important to take care of yourself by eating healthy, protecting your skin with sunscreen, not going outside when the pollen level is high for me. Enjoying a good movie that makes me cry can release stress and tense as well as watching a movie that makes me laugh so hard I cry. I try and relate to my co-workers maintaining social healthy relationships, by being open minded to be a good and understand friend and co-worker. At work I am in charge of the recycle program, if we can reuse, repurpose that is a way to save the environmental and that makes for a happy…

Physical health is obtained by following a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and limiting exposure to toxins (drugs, alcohol, pollution). It is also important to have oral and physical examinations at regular intervals and to practice preventative measures to combat possible illnesses. Mental and emotional health can be referenced interchangeably. They are different in theory but encompass some of the same factors. Managing daily stressors such as work, relationships, and finances can prevent the occurrence of stress induced mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. A socially healthy individual is able to coexist among different types of people without experiencing harmful conflict. It involves the ability to compromise and contribute to meaningful relationships. Social well being is also exemplified through good communications skills, maintaining meaningful relationships, respecting oneself and others, and creating a support system that includes family members and friends.…

To define what is meant by health varies widely between organisation’s but the most commonly used definition is one given by the World Health Organisation which says “ Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social wellbeing.”(Tulchinsky, 2009, page 47). Surrounding the issue of health there are two main ‘models’ which are used. The medical model is based around the absence of disease or disability. If an individual has no disease or disability they are thought of as being in good health. The medical model focuses on the treatment and cure of disease and not on the cause or prevention (Eldin, G,2000) . The social model, according to, Barkaway 2009, health is seen as partially attributed to the social circumstances of…

To maintain satisfactory health, it is essential that we go to great lengths to maintain wealthy conditions in all of those areas. Before reading this chapter I would have defined health as just being about physical activity because that is all I was taught about health. I was taught that health was about having your body in a good condition and eating the right foods. I did not know that there was so much more behind health. Now that I have read this chapter I have learned that health is not only about doing physical activities to keep your body in shape. Health is about having a positive, optimistic outlook. You can have so many dimensions of health such as of course, physical health, spiritual health, social health, intellectual health and environmental health. Physical health refers to the way that your body functions. This includes eating right, getting regular exercise, and being at your recommended body weight. Physical health is also avoiding drugs and alcohol and being free of disease and sickness. Spiritual health is maintaining harmonious relationships with other living things and having spiritual direction and purpose. This includes living according to one’s ethics, morals and values. Social health is the quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers and others you are in contact with.…

Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living being.Personal health depends partially on the active, passive, and assisted cues people observe and adopt about their own health. These include personal actions for preventing or minimizing the effects of a disease, usually a chronic condition, through integrative care. They also include personal hygiene practices to prevent infection and illness, such as bathing and washing hands with soap; brushing and flossing teeth; storing, preparing and handling food safely; and many others. The information gleaned from personal observations of daily living - such as about sleep patterns, exercise behavior, nutritional intake, and environmental features -may be used to inform personal decisions and actions, as well as clinical decisions and treatment plans. Personal health also depends partially on the social structure of a person's life. The maintenance of strong social relationships, volunteering, and other social activities have been linked to positive mental health and even increased longevity. In conclusion it should be included that, in order to be healthy every single person is responsible for his or her physical condition. If people follows the rules and regulation and practice mental relaxation simultaneously, then probably they can lead a healthy life. Personally I believe, healthiness is not only related with the better physical condition, but also related with the better psychological condition as…

Definition of health The definition of health means staying healthy. To have good health practises you need to be doing healthy things regularly. This means making good choices, such as a good and nutritious diet (what you eat and drink) and making good friends, as they influence you emotionally and spiritually. Lifestyle decisions are also included in the definition of health. For example you will need good physical health, to help burn off the calories that you eat. Mental stability is being able to see positive when life doesn’t go as plan and make the best of it. The body is the anatomical side of health. Meaning keeping fit by gaining good eating habits and exercise. Maintaining proper functioning of your organs without complication. The spirit some will argue is part of mental stability. I see spirituality as its own essence. Spirituality is understanding your purpose, finding the connection that is bigger than yourself. Some find that with religion, others through art, the environment etc. When you are connected and open with your spirituality there is an inner peace that gets satisfied and an acceptance about life in general. These three concepts don’t just branch off from the individual but they connect with each other. Community can be branched off to family, work, friends/peers and society. Family normally consist of our parent’s, possible siblings, cousins, grandparents, pets etc. Family connections are generally the first that we make in our lives and tend to be the longest. When those connections are strong it aids to feeling balanced and content. But the adverse effect can occur when a death or…
