What Is Power? Power is a complex word to define because the word itself takes on multiple definitions. In general, power encompasses the complete control over someone or something, according to Webster’s Dictionary. While power is a complex concept to understand, it's easier to know what an example of power is. The word power exemplifies itself through the characteristics of strength, victory and control. A person knows what power is when they are in control of the situation. In this case, this situation can be a sporting event such as fencing. In personal experience, I feel power during fencing events. During this time I’m able to take control of the match and use my strength to my advantage. Though, mainly I know what power is when I win. Victory plays an important part in the true definition of power because winning makes a person push themselves to take control. Likewise, this theme is also present throughout sport events. Going back to fencing, I don’t feel power when I lose, which does happen a lot. Losing is disheartening because it makes one believe they weren’t strong enough to win. One wasn’t able to control the situation and didn’t strive for the best. Coinciding with losing, weakness also personifies what power isn’t because losing often makes one feel weak. Especially during a fencing event, losing is an ultimate downfall. Similarly, tragic, historical events, such as the Holocaust, while an extreme example, exemplifies non power because this event is the ultimate example of weakness and submission.
