Definition Essay Home
Home is defined by the overwhelming sense of peace, comfort, and familiarity that you feel in a place or from the people who surround you. The peaceful sense of home comes from being with family, spending time with God reading the scripture, or being in nature enjoying the fresh, crisp air. The comfort of home, on the other hand, comes from a sense of security, the warmth of my cat curled up on my lap softly purring, the smell of my mother’s cooking, or the sound of my father’s deep laughter that can be heard throughout the house. It’s everywhere else that takes noticing.” As a college student away from my family and what I am familiar with, I am often confronted with feelings of homesickness. Next, I agree with the article when it talks about how people, with their heart and mind, can make things more, make them home. It is amazing how much of an impact certain people have in our lives. Lastly, the article brings up a valid point about those who rediscover home, never find another one, or never leave home, saying, “Some people, as they move through their lives, rediscover home again and again. Some people never find another after once leaving home. And, of course, some people never leave the one home they’ve always known.” This point is especially relevant to me because I have moved several times in my life, each time rediscovering home again. I realized very quickly that “home” wasn’t just about the house that I lived in or a place. Home is defined by the love and comfort that you feel in a place or from the people who surround you and the overwhelming sense of peace and comfort that encompasses

“You can leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” Sonsyrea Tate. Tate’s quote has distinct meaning depending on the individual who analyzes it. Many believe this quote to mean that a home is not a single place or object, but a concept or state of mind, which you have when you are around your family or loved ones. In the book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck this idea of “home is where the heart is,” is shown throughout the book. One of the main characters, Ma, shows with great strength the concept of home is not a dwelling or place where you live, but a state of mind.…

Moving to northern Wisconsin as a young girl was a scary and confusing time. Having been born in Chicago, all I knew was a big city, the crowds of people, the nonstop traffic and all the noises. My home, it was the only place I knew. How could my parents make a decision like this? How could they make me move to a place I had only visited once before -- but barely remembered? The sadness I felt was so overwhelming during that transition that I told myself that if I ever had a family, I would never make them move. As an adult, many years later, I look back and almost chuckle. My family and I have moved many times, for work or family and even adventure. Now as an adult, I push my children to find adventure in every move…

A sense of place can be defined and can be used in many different ways by various different people. To some, it is a characteristic that some places have and some do not, while to others it is a feeling or perception held by people and not by the place itself. My home is a special place to me. It is not only my happy place, but it is also a place where I can also feel other emotions. This house is special to me because it is the first home that my mother and stepfather bought together. Before my stepfather came into my life it was just my mom and I. My mother and I had never lived in a house before. We always lived in either an apartment or a trailer. Moving into a house was something new and exciting for us. I remember standing in the driveway, taking pictures, on my first day of kindergarten. My parents bringing my brother home from the hospital for the first time was exciting but nothing made me more ecstatic than seeing my first car sitting in the driveway of my house. I couldn’t imagine my parents not living in the home that holds so many of our memories.…

I mean, who doesn’t want to go back home? But then again what is a home? For some it doesn’t even exist, and for some they say it’s just a memory. Still others say it is where we belong, it is not a physical structure but rather for me it is a sense of well being. You just feel right, when you’re there, I don’t know, I don’t have the wisdom to elaborate further, but I’m sure there’s a place where you’ve felt it too.…
