Defining Mature Students Being a mature student does not mean being an old-timer. Maturity is not measured by the number of years a person has lived. Instead, the yardstick of maturity is marked by the ability to set priorities, to complete work, and to find help when needed. Setting priorities is a major factor for success in the mature student. First of all, it is important to take the time to be clear about our goals and objectives so that the priorities we set are moving us in the direction of something that is of real value to us. For students, it is necessary to make schedule for studying, especially for full time working students. We always have to keep our eyes on our priorities. Most of all, being healthy is the most important thing in our life. Unless we are healthy, we may not study even if we have clear goals and objectives, so we always have to care about our health. Completing assignments is another mark of a mature student. It is the responsibility of a mature student to complete all assignments on time. Some teachers reduce the points for turning the assignments late. There are teachers who never ask students to turn in assignments. My math teacher also never asks students to turn in assignments, but by doing our assignments, we have a good chance to earn bonus points. Pop-up quizzes are given to us from time to time, and he asks us the exact problems from our assignments. The points earned on pop-up quizzes are considered as bonus points to be added to exam scores. Although setting priorities and completing work are both vital, probably the most important measure of maturity is asking for and finding help when needed. We should find help when we need it, unless help will not find us. None of us can go it alone, so we should not let our fear of being judged stop us from asking for help when we need it.
