DEFENSIVE DRIVING

I. PURPOSE
To reduce the risk of collision and to prevent accidents by trying to anticipate hazardous situations despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others and adjusting driver behavior to compensate.

II. RESPONSIBLE PERSON
1) DRIVER
Qualified and certified
Observe and obey road rules and regulations
Maintain routine checkup of the vehicle.
2) SAFETY TRAINING DEPT
Conduct safety orientation and training.
3) 3RD PARTY certification 4) Land Transportation Office
Conduct examination.
Evaluate the competency of the driver.
Issues the driver’s license.

III. PROCEDURE

1) All drivers should periodically participate in safe driver meetings.
2) Learn to recognize driving situations that can be hazardous.
3) Move into your intended path or direction only if you are assured you will not conflict with other traffic.
4) Before start-up o back-up, walk around vehicle ad look underneath to ensure you have safe clearance for start-up.
5) Slow down substantially for unfamiliar curves.
6) Maintain a safe following distance.
7) Scan around vehicle thoroughly when pedestrians are present.
8) At least once a year, drivers should be evaluated while they are behind the wheels.
These check rides should last at least an hour.
9) Evaluators should use a standard written checklist.
10) A remedial training program should be established and used drivers need additional training. Any remedial training should address evaluated problems.

IV. GUIDELINES

In Accordance with the OSHA STANDARD: SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES FOR EMPLOYEES

Stay Safe
Use a seat belt at all times – driver and passenger(s).
Be well-rested before driving.
Avoid taking medications that make you drowsy.
Set a realistic goal for the number of miles that you can drive safely each day.
If you are impaired by alcohol or any drug, do not drive.
