US Milk Sales Declining Even Though
‘Got Milk’ Marketing Campaign is Praised According to a current study in Age and Aging, starting and continuing to drink milk at a young age can lead to improved physical ability and balance at an older age (“New study finds,” 2012). Because of milk’s inherent attributes of calcium, protein and vitamins A and B, milk has also been linked to bone strength, muscle strength and better eyesight, to name a few. So why have the US milk sales been slowly declining since the 1970s? A recent article on Forbes.com poses the same question. People are well aware of milk’s existence. The ‘Got Milk?’ Advertising campaign was debuted in 1993 and won several awards for its ingenuity. It works wonders for getting people to think about milk, but that is only half the battle. The other half, and arguably more important, is getting them to drink it. Jonathan Baskin, the author of the Forbes.com article, believes this is what the dairy industry is failing to do by not compelling consumers to drink milk. “Memorable branding,” he states, “is not necessarily the same thing as compelling marketing”(Baskin, 2012). To illustrate this, Baskin offers a few ideas, including packaging innovation, partnering with companies and local sourcing. While I believe all three of his ideas are valid, local sourcing seems like it could be very beneficial, at least for the moment. Within the past few years, buying crops locally is becoming more relevant to many people. The thought of promoting local business growth and living a healthy lifestyle drives people to buy locally. So if a local distributor could deliver these local crops and bundle it with fresh local milk, consumers would be willing to pay for the convenience, healthy lifestyle and support of local businesses; at least that is the idea. Milk mustaches seem to be imprinted in our

Humour is used in order to get out of the ‘milk is boring’ idea. When used appropriately, it can enhance liking to a product (Schiffman, 2008). It is proven that humour works better for existing products than new products (Schiffman, 2008) which is why it is chosen to attract attention for an existing product – the milk. Sex appeal can be considered relevant to the product milk. If a sexually suggestive or explicit illustration is relevant to the product advertised, it will make selling impression on the reader (Schiffman, 2008). Sex appeals can be relevant and highly persuasive in this context as the use of milk man as a romantic figure (Milk – Legendary Stuff campaigns) and milk as a naughty kind of beverage (B&S campaigns) is persuasive to the under 40s target market. It had created an emotional connection and led to consumer being more involved which ultimately led to purchase and increased in…

In fact, these new standards are among the toughest in the country, and have been reliably proven to make the milk supply safer than the safety standards utilized by other states. These new standards are designed to prevent people drinking the milk to suffer adverse health effects; however, the tough standards do not go without controversy and consequences. Because of the state’s adoption of these new milk safety standards, there will be an expense imposed on companies wanting to sell milk in Iowa, resulting in a forty million dollar cost each year…

For example, a study in Sweden found that women consuming three or more glasses of milk a day over a span of twenty years had more bone fractures than those who did not. They were especially prone to hip fractures (“12 Frightening Facts About Milk”). Studies specializing in dairy and milk products have concluded that these products do not help prevent or reduce osteoporotic fractures. For example, the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that the consumption of dairy products, particularly at twenty years of age, were linked to an increase of hip fractures in old age. This goes to show that even drinking milk at a young age does not decrease your fracture risk as you age, but in fact increases it (Debunking The Milk Myth: Why Milk Is Bad For You And Your Bones). Also, a twelve- year long study on 77,761 women from ages 34 through 59 at the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that the woman who consumed the most calcium from milk broke more bones than those who didn’t drink milk as regularly.
