This film also supports the ‘american sweetheart’ trend as Mcadams plays the co-lead role. Mcadams again is shown to be a sweetheart as her character battles with the challenge of living her life with an absent husband. Mcadams portrays the ‘in love’ stereotype as she fights for her relationship. This film links to the other films chosen as it portrays Rachel Mcadams in yet again the ‘good’ role.…

The movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has always been one of my favorite romantic comedies. In the movie, it tells of the crazy relationship between Andie Anderson played by Kate Hudson and Benjamin Barry played by Matthew McConaughey. They have a very strange relationship to say the least. Andie is a writer of editorials for a women’s magazine, “Composure”. Her dream is to write what she thinks and believes instead of what her editor thinks and believes will get people to read. Andie comes to the rescue of one of her friends, Linda, who risks her job and worse, she felt much embarrassment after failing to think of material for the new issue because of a recent breakup. The split of Linda and her “boyfriend” becomes a big inspiration for Andie’s new article in which she will explore the ways in which women scare off their potential suitors. To do so, she decides she needs to find a man, and then she needs to start a relationship with him, and then finally do all those things that dig under his skin. Ultimately, losing him in 10 days.…

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks uses two main characters, John’s father and Tim’s brother Alan, to express the symptoms and complications of the psychological disorder Asperger Syndrome. This disorder is considered a form of autism. People with this disorder will be passionate about one or more topics, but will struggle with daily tasks. The novel provides an extended metaphor through John’s father through his obsessive interest in his coin collection, and is difficulty in forming a relationship and communicating with his son as he attempts to raise him on his own. Evidence from his routine schedule and his trouble in controlling feelings is compared to Savannah’s friend Alan, a boy actually diagnosed with the disorder as a child. Savannah uses her knowledge from her studies in college and experience with Alan to diagnose John’s father, and help him understand why he has acted this way through John’s entire life.…

On the other hand the protagonist speaks very fondly of John and expresses that he does everything in well meaning: Dear John! He loves me very dearly, and hates to have me sick. In this way, the portrayal of John and the male gender role is not antagonistic as such, which gives room to nuanced reflections about male and female gender roles in that period of time. Yet in spite of that, the protagonist still shows signs of…
