Dante's Inferno Research Paper
Dante Alighieri lived from 1265-1321, he was born in Florence, Italy and eventually died in Ravenna, Italy. He was married to Gemma Donati, but was secretly in love with Beatrice Portinari, and wrote poems about her from afar. During his life, he accomplished major things, and had many people and poems that influenced him as a writer, such as: Virgil, a Roman poet, and famous troubadours and their works. After he realized what he loved to write about Dante created his own successes. He wrote some major works, but a very important book he wrote was, Divina Comida, which consists of three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Each part plays a specific role in Dante’s journey from hell to purgatory to heaven. Dante’s Inferno has some major themes throughout the book. It is also called an inferior form of Heaven. Now this is the type of circle that is different than all the rest. People that end up in this circle are people who have not sinned, but they were never saved by Christ. It includes people that are non-virtuous Christian adults, and along with them are unbaptized infants. Therefore, we find many great heroes, thinkers, and creative minds in this circle such as Homer, Aristotle, Socrates, Julius Caesar, and Hippocrates. In the First Circle, people live in a castle with seven gates that symbolize The Seven Virtues. The Seven Virtues help protect against temptation of the seven deadly sins. Out of the nine circles of hell, one would want to be in is Limbo, since it can be considered to be the best circle out of all the rest, and there is a wide variety of prominent people there. Furthermore, The Second Circle of Hell is filled with people that have committed a wider variety of sin, and their punishment is crueler than that of the
