We have regulations of care to ensure that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed in life. They are also there to make sure that the child is protected and safe in the environment they are living in.
The General Medical Council (GMC) registers doctors to practice medicine in the UK. Their purpose is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine.
The health and care professions council (HCPC) was set up to protect the public. They keep a register of health and care professionals (e.g. nurses) who have to meet their standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health.
The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have joined together, they are now known as the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are now called DBS checks. A DBS check may be needed for certain jobs or voluntary work for example working with children or in a healthcare setting, and also if you are applying to foster or adopt a child. With a DBS check there comes many negatives, for example someone could lie about their criminal record, they could get away with this by simply changing their address. They may have a criminal record linking to vulnerable children/adults, this could be extremely dangerous if applying for jobs around children etc.
Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They report directly to Parliament and they are independent and impartial. They inspect and regulate services which care for children and young people, and those providing education and skills for learners of all ages. Every week they carry out inspections etc. on these type of places and publish their findings and results on their website.
