Personal Statement – Lawrence Chan
From my past I have always been exposed to Finance.
My grandfather started up a securities trading company before I was born. Although unusual my family would discuss finance with me and this developed my interest so now I look at the wider implication in society finance brings.
When everybody grows up, they must change their mind or some opinion about what they believe. I think I am one of them. Now, I understand that finance is not just a tool to earn money. It is talking about contributing to the better world of tomorrow. I think it is an essential attitude in the real life. Not just a dream. It is the main reason why I want to study Accounting and Finance or Economics. After I studied Economics for a couple of years, I saw that people don't believe in Finance and Economics. They may think that this kind of things can not apply to the real life situation. However, I don't think it is applicable. I think that learning Finance and Economics is necessary to help us to allocate our resource like making decisions for their life. It motivates me to help people become able to make a choice for themselves about their life and money.
I am confident of doing well in Accounting and Finance. Putting aside my family background, I studied The Principles of Accounts. Although HKCE exam is one of the hardest exams in the world, I still got a reasonable grade and I am sure that my knowledge is improving well.
During last year, I worked voluntarily for a pre-preparatory school as an assistant for the teacher. I learnt how to be responsible for my job and co-workers there and become trustworthy. The job also required a high level of communication between the co-workers. Even though English is not my mother tongue, I did improve a lot by communicating with the teachers and chatting with the pre-prep school students. Moreover, I achieved the first class for the essential certificate in word processing techniques from The City and Guilds of

Have been studying in university nearly two years, I have come to some conclusions about accounting. Until now, the thing that I enjoy is in financial accounting, because it is need us to do a lot of calculating and to check some financial report, because they are interesting. The things I have found difficult and struggled are about some accounting theories and rules, that is a little bit hard for me to remember them and some formulas, especially some concepts of terminology, they will make international students confused. Actually, I am a more of mathematics person rather than a strategic one. When I do these things that I found confused, I may feel upset but I still struggled with it as I see it as a challenge, I must fight with it and defeat it. In the future, I will read more concepts in accounting learning, and I also prepare to read more textbooks due to that will help me learn the accounting and help to have a better understanding.…

I have chosen to apply for a degree course, which combines theoretical and practical Drama, with an emphasis on practical work. I am anticipating this will lead to a post-graduate course of further intensive training; ultimately leading to a career in acting. With this in mind, I am taking advantage of a GAP year, to gain further experience in the theatre. As an A-level Theatre Studies student, I am involved in studying the practitioners behind contemporary drama and this I enjoy. However, I find that I am drawn towards the aspects of the course that involve working as a group to produce our own pieces. I find that this is very helpful in developing my skills in group-work, and I also feel a sense of achievement at the end of these projects.…

In fact, I dropped it my sophomore year due to it seeming inconsequential and boring. During my junior year, I was in dire straits, in danger of being ousted from the competitive debating team due to my lack of economic know-how. I began reading multitudes of Economics books. Soon, however, I realized that I was reading not out of necessity but out of curiosity. Economics afforded me a greater understanding of the world which I absolutely loved. I came to see economics as all-encompassing, affecting everything from the price of milk to violent revolutions. While the analytical nature of economics enthralled me, it was the importance of human behavior that drew me in. To me, economics was both an art and a science, a discipline so intricately interwoven into society and life that it seemed…

Peter Bernstein is his book Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street, provides us with a framework and timeline of how economics and finance interact. He details the ideas and contributions that many men have made in the evolution of financial theory. Finance was neglected by economists for many years, Bernstein argued. Early financial economists struggled to gain the acceptance of their economic colleagues. Yet, throughout his book he explains the process of how many dedicated and improbable individuals, such as engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and eventually economists put their minds into the financial world.…
