Vengeance has always been a popular theme for movies and books throughout time. The heroic individual spends the whole story trying to avenge the death of someone very close to them and along the way falls in love with another character. Isabel Allende wrote "An Act of Vengeance" with a surprising twist to it. "She knew she could not carry out the vengeance she had planned because she loved the killer,"(Allende 61) The theme woven through the tale is about how one girl seeks for closure for her father’s death but along the way falls in love with the person who made her vengeful. Allende used the setting, symbolism and the outcome to develop the theme. With those three elements, her story was crafted into a dynamic story about the perfect vengeance.

The story takes place in a town called Santa Teresa where it could be argued around the end of the American civil war. The main character is Rosa, a girl who lives with her father in "a house which rose up proudly on top of a hill"(Allende 57). This house was so beautiful that everyone in the village and in other towns around it knew what it looked like. The house also had a garden with a fountain that was surrounded by magnolias (58). It was created to be something stunning like Rosa. After Tadeo, who is one of the dynamic characters and his men entered the town it was no longer somewhere that was desirable to be. Tadeo finds Rosa in a room and with her dead father beside her, he takes her into another room and takes advantage of her. Even though her neighbours advise her to move to another town Rosa disagrees, rebuilds her house and plans her vengeance against Tadeo. She rebuilds it so well that the town starts to forget about the tragedy and men from nearby come to seek her for a mate. in the final scene the setting is set to be almost the same as when rosa lost her father. Everyone was gathered together to celebrate a memorable event and the people in the village did not know something horrific would happen.

The main theme Isabel Allende’s short story ‘An Act of Vengeance’ is that of Vengeance and the various approaches Dulce Rosa takes. The main aspect of the character is her female dominance in a predominantly male world. You can see this when she expresses her independence after she suffers rape. When the incident occurs, Rosa’s neighbors advise her to move away from the area and go and live with her Godmother where she can start again with nobody knowing her situation. However, she refuses to leave the town and continues on with her life within the ruins of her father’s home. Planning a way to keep the promise she had made to her father, and get revenge on the man who turned her world upside down.…

In 1928, Joseph Stalin became one of the world’s most contentious leaders. During the period that Stalin was in control of mother Russia, he transformed the Soviet Union into a modern super power. He used certain methods to change Russia. He did this by modernizing the Russian economy with his Five Year Plans. He also increased industrial and agricultural production with his policy of collectivization. He carried out purges or the harsh movements against his enemies to make sure he kept total control of the U.S.S.R.…

Revenge, the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for their wrongdoings against another, is characterized as a corruption of the mind of the affected individual. Throughout the history of literature, countless authors have incorporated the theme of revenge into their works. For example, in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, Roger Chillingworth seeks revenge on Minister Dimmesdale because of his crime committed with Hester. Similarly, in William Shakespeare’s, Othello, Iago devises an evil plan to avenge Othello of his rumored sin.…

There are several different meanings, and themes presented in the movie “Twilight Samurai”. This movie takes us through the everyday life of a 50-koku samurai. It is presented as a flashback, told by Iguchi Seibei’s daughter Kayana. The movie starts off with sorrow and hardships which is a very consistent theme throughout the movie. The title of the movie is very appropriate in my opinion. “Twilight Samurai” is not only the nickname that his colleagues gave him, but the word twilight also describes the period in Japanese history immediately before the Meiji restoration, which brought an End to samurai power and privilege (Twilight Samurai, 2005). Twilight Samurai is a movie about loyalty, honor, love, hardships, and death, but a huge part of this movie is also describing the dramatic changes in Japanese culture, and the meaning of life in a new world.…

There were two presidents in office during this era. William Howard Taft, the 27th president, was in office from 1909 to 1913.During Taft's term everyone compared him to Roosevelt, the previous president, and would always criticize his ways. People always talked smack about how he supported big business, although no one ever mentioned how he was the first president to protect federal lands on oil had been found. Also how he protected coal infested lands. Some people may say that he was a bad president because he kept the government from enforcing the 15th Amendment, which gives black people the right to vote.…
