Craft-Oriented Objects
We encounter many craft- oriented objects day to day. I do not think I really thought about how objects were made and their value in life until I received this assignment. As I was thinking about all of the things that are craft- oriented, I especially thought about things at work and my home. I actually work at a dress shop and I’ve thought about how those dresses were made. Every dress company has a location where they make their dresses, like China. Each dress is handmade and takes many hours and hard work to make. I believe this is an art of craft and has high value in a woman’s world. I also own many dresses of my own from going to prom and participating in various pageants. The next time I am wearing one of these delicate dresses I am going to take a minute to think about the hard work and long hours that it took to make my dress just for me. Another one of the many craft-oriented objects that I see and use every day is my home. My home is one of the most important places to me and it has several qualities that make it unique to me. It is amazing to think about all the hard work and the time that went in to building my house. Although my house has many craft-oriented objects in it, my house as a whole is a huge craft-oriented object in my everyday

The Harvard Peabody Museum trip that we went to showed us a lot of objects that were used in the old days. An object that I found very interesting and an ideal example of art was the Ladle. I consider the Ladle a great example to the how Miller states that anthropologist define as “the application of imagination, skill and style to matter, movement, and sound that goes beyond the purely practical.” because it was collected in Sarnia, Ontario. The wooden ladle is carved in the shape of a hand holding a turtle shell. The ladle looked like a spoon and I assume that it was used as one for the meals and that it had the shape of a hand to make it easier to hold.…

Her iconic jersey wrap dresses are still produced today, and still have the popularity that they did in the 70’s. Without the innovative style created by Diane von Furstenberg the women’s fashion industry would not have grown into the empire that it is today. Her designs not only re-created feminism for women in fashion, she also showed women how they could overcome the conservative societal perception of women at that time. Her simple wrap dress created an hourglass silhouette that many women began to desire. Diane has an unparalleled compassion for woman, which is easily seen in her designs. She wants women to love themselves first, and love what their wearing…

Vera was also an avid figure skater that competed in National Chapionships for figure skating, until she graduated. Seeking a change in her career, she took a job with creative director and design director of accessories for Ralph Lauren, she also got engaged the same year. So Vera decided to sketch her own gown and took the sketch to a dressmaker and it cost her $10,000. The next year with her father’s help Vera opened her first Bridal Boutique in the Carlyle Hotel called Vera Wang Bridal House, and it was an upscale boutique that catered to the wealthiest clients. I’ve always enjoyed buying clothes with my mother and father as they cause for excellent memories. However, as customs and traditions went, I wasn’t getting the clothes that would allow me liberty to express myself as an individual. I don’t blame my parents for being raised in a conservative country where they lived in a tiny village. I find my culture a big portion of my life and in every way incorporate those traditions into my everyday life. The restrictions I was growing up with caused my craving for creativity and…

To expand my knowledge and take up a challenge in another creative field, I participated in the annual fashion show at Liberty. Although I was the designer with the least experience and one of the few who is not majoring in fashion design, I demonstrated as much passion for creativity as everyone else in the show. However, I often experienced low self-esteem whenever I failed to sew an invisible zipper or a seamless seam finish, but I kept looking for video tutorials and encouraged myself not to underestimate my ability. Before I knew it, I had spent an entire spring break finishing the final garment. My design inspiration came from millions of asteroids with different formations and sizes in outer space. The dress I made is a sleeveless tube dress with a sparkling front-split that highlights a modern, sexy, and feminine look. To incorporate my inspiration of asteroids into this look, I depicted a scene of the asteroids floating in space by adhering multiple rhinestones around the neckline and sprinkling glitter to the front-split fabric of the dress. Throughout the fashion show, I had to practice my patience, strengthen my sewing skills, and most importantly, take the initiative and turn a dress from a drawing into a reality. These skills are not only going to benefit my future career but also enrich my personal life. As time passes, I see my dad's opposition to my major as a blessing in disguise because it has given me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and discover how strongly I feel about art and…

The Arts and Crafts Movement began in the last decades of the 19th century. It was developed by the ideas and views of William Morris who was inspired by John Ruskin. William Morris was a dynamic and multi-talented man. His name is “indissolubly linked to wallpaper design” (William Morris & Wallpaper Design, [sa]). All his designs were made by hand and not machines because Morris believed that “the tastelessness of mass-produced goods and the lack of honest craftsmanship might be addressed by a reunion of art with craft” (Meggs and Purvis 1998:179).…

Every year, women devote billions of dollars in exchange for beautiful hair, expensive cosmetics, and opulent wardrobes. Many of our culture's most common beauty procedures were nearly absent an era ago. The fact is, many of the beliefs of feminine beauty were created in large part by current advertisers, thus becoming societal norms. However, through her diffident wardrobe change, author of the article My Year of Modesty, Lauren Shields, suggests that to live an authentic life, one must be immune to society’s definition of beauty, thus giving release for a return to our true selves. Shields, detailed writing of her experience made for a compelling argument.…
