1. How do information systems projects get started in organizations?
Information systems projects get started in organizations when there is a problem or the company has a new goal like we read in Petrie’s case. In the case we read in our text the organization has a new goal to not only survive but also prosper beyond that. They want to implement a new customer service approach and therefore need to start the information systems project, which will track customer information and purchases.
2. How are organizational information systems related to company strategy? How does strategy affect the information systems a company develops and uses?
The purpose of the information system in the first place is to help the company reach this goal or solve future problems as I mentioned before. Therefore, if the company desires to change their goal then the information systems project would have to be revised according to the new goal. The results of the information systems project will greatly affect the business by either providing what the business needs to prosper or failing to do so and ultimately causing the demise of the organization. Information systems either make the company more effective and efficient or the alternative.
* 4. What do you think Jim’s next step would be? Why? Jim’s next step should be to get a group of personnel together that have the experience to assist him in creating the project needed. He will need to find out exactly what the company wants to offer (discounts, etc.), what the company’s budget is (can they afford membership cards), and collect customer and competitor information. He will then have to create a program that will allow the employee to create a customer account and issue them a number or member card. The customer would use this card or number every time they make a purchase. This program will have to collect the data of the customers’ purchases and
