Courage In Nightjohn
Courage is key

Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. When you have courage you can stand up to things that you know are wrong, but other people wouldn’t stand up to because they're scared of the consequences. There are some people that have the courage to do what others wouldn’t do. In the book NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, NightJohn and Sarny had the courage to do what other wouldn’t do. Throughout the book NightJohn and Sarny were the ones with the most courage. For example, on page 38 Sarny asks “Can you teach me those?” NightJohn says “I sure can.” NightJohn just said that he is taking the risk to teach Sarny to read. If NightJohn gets caught he could get whipped and beaten. Also if Sarny were to get caught writing

Mammy was the one getting blamed for teaching Sarny. NightJohn could’ve let Mammy get beaten for something she didn’t do but he didn’t - “She don’t know nothing. It was me that taught her” (page 72). Courage is what gave him the power to say that it was him. NightJohn knew the consequences for teaching Sarny to read and write, so he had to tell Waller that it was him no matter what the consequences were. Another example, of courage is when NightJohn ran away to go teach other people to read and write. It was even more courageous of him to come back at night and tell Sarny this “Follow me. We got to go so’s you can get back before first light” (page 85). NightJohn put his life at risk just to teach a girl to read and write, and risked her life just to live a little like the whites do. NightJohn didn’t have to come back to Sarny, but the amount of courage he has told him to go back, and make her happy and teach her. In the end, courage can help you through anything. The book NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, shows that you can because NightJohn and Sarny had really hard lives as being slaves, but managed to always have courage. If Sarny didn’t have the courage to ask NightJohn to teach her she would still not be able to read or write. Courage is what you

“It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather, they were too frightened to be cowards” (pg 22). This quote perfectly embodies the view Tim O’Brien has on courage, as he eloquently demonstrates in his book The Things They Carried. Although all the characters of this novel display O’Brien’s point of view, the three shining examples of this are Norman Bowker, Jimmy Cross, and Tim O’Brien himself.…

Nelson Mandela once said “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, uses characters to display courage many times throughout the novel. It's about a white father defending a black man in the racist town of Macomb, Alabama, in the 1930's. I found a few examples of courage for each character that stood out to me most. Atticus, Scout, and Boo Radley. First, a brave, hardworking, single parent, Atticus Finch. He first shows courage when he shoots a mad dog to protect his family when he hasn't touched a gun in over thirty years. Another character in the story, Miss Maudie, explains “I guess he put down his gun when he reilized god gave him an unfair advantage over most living things...” Another courages thing Atticus does, is standing up for…

Another character in the novel that demonstrated bravery was Dolphus Raymond. He was brave because he let everyone know that he loves an African American when it wasn’t right in other peoples’ eyes. He says, “They could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live.” (pg. 268) The reason why he lives this way is because he prefers African Americans. Dolphus Raymond even has mixed children with his wife. Another reason why he is brave is because he has a different mindset speaking as a white man; he believes that white people give hell to black people and that it is wrong.…

A person is courageous when fear is present, yet they still choose to act in spite of it. Frederick Douglass demonstrated courage through his passion to learn, to read, to write. The risk of being caught was tremendous, “it is almost an unpardonable offence to teach slaves to read” (2). Without a risk, “there can be no progress” (Frederick Douglass). Douglass’s goal was to attain his freedom. He wanted to be acknowledged as equal to a white man. He refused to accept anything less than his own spiritual, physical, and intellectual…
