Staying Fat For Riches By Chris Crutcher
Why do we need courage? We need courage for many reasons. Without courage we wouldn’t be able to do anything. We would do the same things and not learn anything new. It would be the same thing over and over again. In the book “Staying Fat For Sarah Brynes” by Chris Crutcher it shows many reasons on why we need courage. Courage helps us live the best we can, help us do things we don’t want to do, and stick up for ourselves.

With courage you can live life the best way you possibly can. When Sarah didn’t get the courage to speak to anyone about her dad she had to live with him and deal with his anger. “I can’t ever go home again. My dad is getting crazier, and like I said the other day, there’s nothing to mean for him to do if he thinks he needs to” (Crutcher 174). If Sarah had the courage to speak up to someone about her dad she would’ve never had to pretend to not speak to get away from him.

She said she had made a number of suicide attempts first, but even messed those up; that leaving her daughter was bad enough, but not protecting her in the first place was unforgivable’” (261-262). If Sarah’s mom had the courage to stay she would of lived with one less big regret and a pretty clean

J.K. Rowling said, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Rowling was right, you always need courage for anything, especially when you need to stand up to someone you like. In the TED talk “Living with Courage: Embracing Fear to Follow Your heart”, Kelley Kalafatich said, “Not acting because of feeling unmotivated, indecisive, apathy, to comfortable, or even feeling lazy about doing something, these are sometimes hidden fears or anxieties that hold us back from doing something really great.” Not being courageous can ruin your life. You won’t take risks and have the excitement you should be having. You also will never see who you could have been, a success. This quote can easily…

A great man named Steve Jobs once said “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition” (Steve Jobs) Mr. Jobs advice is applicable to everyday life whether it be confronting a bully, asking out a crush or saving someone from a burning building. Similarly in Harper Lee’s influential time less novel To Kill a Mockingbird there are numerous characters that helped to establish the theme of courage. The three primary characters that did this they are Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose and finally Atticus Finch who is one of the most inspirational characters in the novel.…

All of us have the potential to live and act courageously, if we can push through our own fears. Most of us have learned fears that limit our comfort zones and stand in the way of being our best and accomplishing our goals. We have been conditioned to follow the rules, not rock the boat, to go along with things we feel are wrong so others will like and accept us. There are a number of ways people can unlock the courage within themselves, including committing to causes they believe in, connecting with others, welcoming failure as a natural and beneficial part of life, and harnessing anger.…

The current dictionary definitions of courage are inadequate because they only include references to physical courage and omit instances of inner strength. Three contemporary dictionaries agree closely on the definition although they differ in the order of importance. Webster’s New World Dictionary describes courage as “an attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult or painful, instead of withdrawing from it,” and The American Heritage Dictionary gives a similar explanation. While The Shorter Oxford Dictionary concurs with this meaning, it states that the primary definition is “spirit, mind, or disposition.”…

What is courage? It is an adult who experienced life’s tragedy as a kid or a kid trying to survive alone without his father. It can be a father who goes against the flow of society to fight for what is right or the “dead poet’s society” trying to suck out the marrows of life. There are various means to show courage, but not everyone has the capability to demonstrate it. The characters in the selection had the ability to know right from wrong and stand up for what they believe in even in the face of great adversity.…

There are many ways to define courage. Courage is risking your life to help someone, in my opinion. Knowing their lives are in danger, fire fighters still battle blazes and police officers still chase violent criminals. When we need them, they are there. And we are always glad to see them. Standing up to injustice is also courageous. Civil rights fighters would be good examples. I believe it takes courage to face the day when you are sick or poor or homeless. A friend of mine adopted four children. You could say that takes courage. I certainly would! There is also everyday courage. Everyday courage could mean persisting, day in and day out, to meet a personal challenge. A personal challenge might be getting better grades. Staying healthy might…
