Counselor Strengths
My character strengths and attributes and I perceive them to contribute to my desire to become a good professional counselor and works with deaf and hard of hearing population are to be a good listener, be an excellent communicator, be able to appreciate diversity, be friendly, be flexible, and have a sense of humor. My weaknesses are not able to be authoritative and mediation and they may present the potential challenges in my journey to becoming a professional counselor.
The first thing that comes to my mind is I am a good listener. The school counselors must be able to listen to any of the students, parents, and faculties. The major time spent as a school counselor is to listen and process the information that is given to me by others.

I can put myself in the shoes of the student and understand the situation from their point of view even though if I don’t completely agree with their perspective, but I have the ability to understand how it feels to them in order to address their issue effectively. I am a very discrete person, so I think it is important to be discrete as a school counselor. I can be able to maintain the confidentiality so the student can trust me with their concerns, problems, questions.
The one of several weaknesses of mine are not able to be authoritative which may present the potential challenge in my journey to becoming a professional counselor. For example, I am not completely comfortable when I have to cross the boundary from “friend” to professional when there is abuse or neglect is suspected or present or if the student is engaging in risky or harmful behavior. I may not be able to know when to show my authority and take the proper steps to ensure the student’s safety.
Another weakness of mine, I admit, I am not very patient. Though it is an important trait for a school counselor interacting with kids all the time, but I cannot really interact with kids very well if I lose patient. I may have a difficulty trying to get the kids trust me and accept certain things which is problematic for me as a school

Everyone may have strengths and weaknesses. Based on what I have learned from the Ethical Lens Inventory I found my strengths are fortitude and compassion. I demonstrate courage and steadiness in the face of obstacle. Because I value equality, when I am at my best, I demonstrate compassion for others. My weaknesses are confusion and entitlement. So I have to develop the practice of mindfulness and reflection, at some point I will confront the loss of my center, especially if I lose the role with which I have become identified. I pay attention; my temptation will be to believe that I entitled to special privileges because I have not…

While they may not be able to control all of their circumstances, they can learn to manage his or her response. My goal is to make sure my students understand that they matter and that they are worthy and have a choice. I say this because it is human nature not to readily take responsibility and place blame when things don’t go well. While I understand some students may have tumultuous circumstances, I still must try and encourage them to choose a positive path. I believe we become what we believe. My goal is to help students experience a shift in thinking so they can begin to see themselves and their situations differently so that they can begin accept the reality of the current circumstances and try and work beyond those perceived limitations. You experience a change in thought when you begin to know and value yourself and take responsibility for your own…

My unique educational environment of a school has allowed me the opportunity to form close relationships with teachers and students alike, enabling me to interact with people of various backgrounds and ages. These experiences prepared me for my encounters beyond the realm of the classroom. Within this environment, I planned my class' junior and senior trips. The abilities an individual possesses are an accumulation of their previous life experiences and the various competences which have been practiced for many years. Often times, these skills are overlooked and taken for granted as we never actually think about them in terms of their effect on our potential career choices. After thinking about my personal skills, I compiled a list which included; communication, cooperation, patience, listening, helping others and perseverance; all skills which I have possessed for majority of my lifetime and have used to overcome many challenges. One example in particular which required me to draw on many of these skills, was fairly recently; I am a dance instructor for children ages four to seven and there was a young boy who joined the class later than the rest of the students. I noticed that he was struggling…
