Cool Hand Luke Symbolism
What and who is cool hand Luke? Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 American prison drama film, and cool hand Luke is a name that was given to one of the prisoners. No inmate got a nickname unless Dragline gave him one. Dragline gave Luke the name of "Cool Hand Luke" because of a winning poker hand that Luke had. King, 10,9,4,3. Dragline said that he won the hand with nothing. Luke replied, "Yeah, well sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand." His real name was Lucas Jackson, the main character of the movie which symbolically represents the life of Christ. Now I will continue and explain some scenes in which Luke symbolizes God. For example, the scene that had such resemblance with god was when Luke said he can eat fifty hard- boiled eggs in one hour. Dragline bets everyone that Luke can eat fifty hard-boiled eggs in an hour. The number fifty becomes significant. Since there are fifty prisoners' souls and …show more content…
Luke's mother's name is Arletta (Our Lady), and when he learns about her death, he sings about the Virgin Mary sitting on an abalone shell. In his conversation with his mother, he makes sure his brother John ought to receive the inherited land, just as Jesus made sure John and Mary took care of one another from the cross. It is very interesting to me when Luke receives a depressing visit from his mother and brother. His mother is old and sick, and Luke senses that this will be the last time he will see her. Shortly after the visit Luke's mother does die. Not only is Luke not allowed to attend her services, but the warden, sensing that Luke may try to escape to go to the funeral, and has Luke locked in the "box." After the burial Luke is let out, but that night he makes a hole in the floor of the bunkhouse and escapes. Soon he is captured and punished by the warden. I also like the song plastic Jesus that he sang and played with the

Luke is Vivian’s most beloved son and it pains her to see him go. She is unable to tell him to stay because she cannot control Luke, nobody can. Luke always does what he thinks is best, which in this case is to transport goods on the wagon track to soldiers. Luke does not let Celia tell him what to do either. Luke always gets his way, no matter who he is dealing with. Celia tries to tell Luke that she can stay in Charleston, but he replies, “You are leaving this town if I have to tie you and gag you and bury you under a load of live mackerel in a fishing-boat” (Bristow 340). Luke will go to huge extents to get what he wants, even if he has to do illegal tasks such as kidnapping. Luke wants Celia out of town and into safety so he can focus on the war. A popular theme that echoes throughout the texts of many British authors is religion; mainly in the point of view from the Holy Bible. In most british literature, the reader can draw conclusions that the author drew insight from the stories based upon Christianity. This insight can be reflected by major characters or events that happen in the text. In the allegory “Lord of the Flies” Simon, a major character, reflects Jesus Christ because both have similar events happen to them. As similar events occur the reader can also theorize that Simon and Jesus share similar traits .…

In Cool Hand Luke, Luke Jackson is sent to prison for cutting heads off of parking meters. The prison themed film symbolizes an analogy of Jesus. Luke’s atheism is expressed throughout several scenes, up until his rebellion is beaten out of him. The irony of the film occurs when he becomes a Christ-like figure to the other prisoners, his disciples.…

where his photograph is crinkled in the shape of a cross, Jesus Christ is a definite aspect for theme. “Small wonder so many folks saw a blue-eyed Jesus in the role” (Pevere 1). It is a small wonder-isn’t it? How ironically the rebel of the film resembles Jesus Christ himself. “ Then too, after the station wagon bearing the dying Newman drives off into the rainy night, a dramatic point at which to have ended the film, there is a postlude establishing partly with flashbacks that Newman has Christ-like become a convict legend” (Champlin 4). Regardless of his…

Cool Hand Luke is in the genre of prison movies, but that’s not all this movie is, it also had several different parts where it is portrayed as being Christ like. Luke is supposed to be the Christ like figure, one thing that showing this is Luke’s name and his number on his shirt. Another is when Luke lays on the table after eating the 50 eggs; he is in a crucified position. Also the number three is big in the Christian religion and in the movie Luke tries to escape three times. Lastly Luke taking the beating from dragline and never backing down is similar to Jesus taking his beating before he was crucified and never backing down from his beliefs.…

The use of symbol to express human understandings of God is useful because it can hold a deeper meaning than can be described using words. The Christian symbol of the crucifix for example, reminds people of Jesus’ death on the cross, but the deeper meaning that can be gotten from this is the idea of Jesus’ as a sacrifice he made for our sins.…

The characterization of individuals through specific and repeated character descriptions are consistent with social norms and create binding values associated each character. In the Iliad, which can be considered the primary religious text of antiquity, godly epithets are used to accompany characters with dominant abilities. The Bible also features consistent divine descriptions throughout the various writings. By regularly featuring characters with “godlike” descriptions, Homer’s language defines the humanity and position of the Greek gods, creating a sharp distinction from the descriptive writing in the Bible that defines the unreachable position of the monotheistic God. Although the gods of the Iliad and the God of Genesis are similar in their interaction with mortals, the usage and nature of divine language in character descriptions, along with the ability for a mortal to attain “godlike” status, are remarkably different.…

Although Luke’s mom cares a lot for her son, she is also a great example of family influences on a person’s dream. On page 257, she tells Luke how they need to move up North for better opportunities. Luke is obviously not very comfortable with the news but he has no other option but to settle. He must conform to his family’s decision because he’s too young to make his own. This event in the book shows how family can make a person’s decisions for them.…

The actor that played the role of Jesus Christ was very persuasive and I found the way he played his character was very funny and relatable. In the musical Godspell, Jesus Christ is a hippie strolling through the rumbling city of New York hoping to empower the human race with feelings of peace and unity. Jesus Christ was very relatable because unlike how he is perceived in the bible as greater than man he is instead downsized and plays the role of a clown. When you read the bible, readers are almost afraid of Jesus because of all the power he can forge upon whoever he wishes which can seem intimidating. This musical shines Jesus Christ on a whole new light that makes it easier to fall in love with a man who can part a red sea rather than fear him for his powers are eternal and great. Jesus Christ is also playing the role of a comedian and the actor that did a great job perceiving Jesus Christ as a funny and relatable character which is very hard to do since he is a person that everyone has heard of and perceive him in a specific way which is different to how he is perceived in the play.…

Joseph Campbell’s theory of monomyth can be applied to almost every story and movie that we encounter today. Elements of myth have found their way into countless “non-mythological” stories. For example, superheroes are, oftentimes, very god-like. The Star Wars trilogy mirrors the age-old ‘good versus evil’ conflict. Luke Skywalker follows the “departure-initiation-return” pattern, just as the unnamed narrator in James Joyce’s Araby.…

Symbolism is used a lot in everyday life. People see many symbolic objects while just driving down the road, like the golden arches of McDonald’s. They see them while watching commercials, like the cavemen in GEICO commercials. People see symbolism in movies, like the biblical references in the Matrix trilogy. It is a very popular tool used by writers and poets. The short story “The Hand” for example is full of symbolism.…
