Cool Hand Luke
Cool Hand Luke Cool Hand Luke is in the genre of prison movies, but that’s not all this movie is, it also had several different parts where it is portrayed as being Christ like. Luke is supposed to be the Christ like figure, one thing that showing this is Luke’s name and his number on his shirt. Another is when Luke lays on the table after eating the 50 eggs; he is in a crucified position. Also the number three is big in the Christian religion and in the movie Luke tries to escape three times. Lastly Luke taking the beating from dragline and never backing down is similar to Jesus taking his beating before he was crucified and never backing down from his beliefs. Luke is not only the name of our main character in this movie, but the name Luke comes from a biblical figure. Luke was a physician who wrote the third of the four canonical gospels and the Book of Acts. The number thirty seven on the back of Luke’s shirt mean nothing by itself, but when you put thirty seven together with Luke’s name you get the Bible verse Luke 1:37 which states “For nothing will be impossible with God”. This meaning that if we put our faith in god all things are possible, and throughout our story Luke does not do that he questions that God is real. When it starts to rain the prisoners are told to get in to the truck and Luke mocks the Lord by saying “Look at him go. Bam! Bam!” (Cool Hand Luke), Dragline replies by saying “Knock it off, Luke! You cain’t about Him that way” Luke then says “You still believe in the Big Breaded Boss, Drag? You think he’s up there watching us?” Luke ask to be stuck by lightening just to show that someone is there and he ends it with “Standin’ out here in the rain! All alone! Talkin’ to myself”. In this scene, God does not show him that he is real by taking his life, but by taking his mother’s life. Dragline is talking up Luke by saying he can eat anything “He’s the champeen hog-gut of this camp. Hell, I seen him eat ten choc’lat bars and seven cold

When individuals of a higher rank give orders, make decisions and enforce obedience to lower ranked individuals, it is normative for persons to obey orders. When an order is disobeyed, insubordination is probable, thus causing the individual with previously lower status to fight back against the oppression. In the film Cool Hand Luke, the narrative is largely based on the main character Luke, refusing to conform to life in a rural prison. Throughout the film, Luke struggles to obey authority and is seen trying to escape from the prison. Dragline, however, conforms to traditional norms of the prison and abides by commands. Obedience to an authoritative figure is also a major theme in the film because the prison is an institution where rules…

where his photograph is crinkled in the shape of a cross, Jesus Christ is a definite aspect for theme. “Small wonder so many folks saw a blue-eyed Jesus in the role” (Pevere 1). It is a small wonder-isn’t it? How ironically the rebel of the film resembles Jesus Christ himself. “ Then too, after the station wagon bearing the dying Newman drives off into the rainy night, a dramatic point at which to have ended the film, there is a postlude establishing partly with flashbacks that Newman has Christ-like become a convict legend” (Champlin 4). Regardless of his…

The film begins in the early 1960’s with a man by the name of Lucas Jackson cutting the heads off of a row of parking meters while intoxicated. He is picked up by the authorities and sentenced to two years in a Florida prison camp. He is greeted by the warden, the captain and his guards, or better known as “Bosses” by the inmates, immediately upon arrival. They begin to judge Luke for what he has done and this can arguably be compared to the romans bringing Jesus before Pontius Pilate to be judged for blasphemy. Luke was Cutting the heads off of parking meters to “settle an old score” (Cool Hand Luke) as he puts it, meaning he was doing it for a reason he believed in. Jesus was being judged by Pilate for spreading the word of god and bringing his belief’s to others.…

This emphasis on character growth and the development of a man into a gentleman, is what influenced James Naismith to create the game of Basketball in 1891 (Harris, 2014, p.1). Moreover, men would desire to play it for benefits other than just physical activity. Loyalty, self control, self sacrifice and teamwork, the foundations of Christianity and altruistic Christian manhood, were the moral principles that basketball originally promoted (Carroll, 2003, p. 197).…

Although there are many differences between the life of Jesus, as depicted in the bible and Owen Meany, there are many similarities as well, so many in fact, that the reader is forced to ponder if these similarities are intentional.…
