Cool Hand Luke Cool Hand Luke is in the genre of prison movies, but that’s not all this movie is, it also had several different parts where it is portrayed as being Christ like. Luke is supposed to be the Christ like figure, one thing that showing this is Luke’s name and his number on his shirt. Another is when Luke lays on the table after eating the 50 eggs; he is in a crucified position. Also the number three is big in the Christian religion and in the movie Luke tries to escape three times. Lastly Luke taking the beating from dragline and never backing down is similar to Jesus taking his beating before he was crucified and never backing down from his beliefs. Luke is not only the name of our main character in this movie, but the name Luke comes from a biblical figure. Luke was a physician who wrote the third of the four canonical gospels and the Book of Acts. The number thirty seven on the back of Luke’s shirt mean nothing by itself, but when you put thirty seven together with Luke’s name you get the Bible verse Luke 1:37 which states “For nothing will be impossible with God”. This meaning that if we put our faith in god all things are possible, and throughout our story Luke does not do that he questions that God is real. When it starts to rain the prisoners are told to get in to the truck and Luke mocks the Lord by saying “Look at him go. Bam! Bam!” (Cool Hand Luke), Dragline replies by saying “Knock it off, Luke! You cain’t about Him that way” Luke then says “You still believe in the Big Breaded Boss, Drag? You think he’s up there watching us?” Luke ask to be stuck by lightening just to show that someone is there and he ends it with “Standin’ out here in the rain! All alone! Talkin’ to myself”. In this scene, God does not show him that he is real by taking his life, but by taking his mother’s life. Dragline is talking up Luke by saying he can eat anything “He’s the champeen hog-gut of this camp. Hell, I seen him eat ten choc’lat bars and seven cold
