Contemporary & Classical Leadership Styles There has been much research compiled that compares the differences of the classic theories of leadership and management versus contemporary style of leadership and management. Both styles have been found to have their unique advantages, depending on the type of organization the theories are being utilized in. In this paper, I will be discussing the key variables needed in a leadership theory to effectively lead and manage others. I will also examine major components of each theory, and how they compare to one another. Finally, I will examine which theory best fits my leadership qualities, and my ability to lead others in an organizational setting. Yukl, (2010). describes three major variables in leadership theories. The first characteristic of a leadership theory is character traits. This includes motive: What is the reason this person is asking others to follow him or her? The second characteristic is personality: What type of person is this; are they confident and optimistic about reaching the desired outcome? Do they have the skills and expertise to instruct others on how they can go about reaching the goals set forth? The third characteristic of an effective leadership theory is values: Does this person believe in honesty and integrity, and will this person not sacrifice their beliefs to reach a goal that seems out of reach, or can be obtained by taking shortcuts? (p. 12). The second variable needed is the attitude of the followers. The followers must first have the need to want to succeed. They must also want to be able to be lead, and not have their own agenda or reasoning for being a part of the organization. The followers must have the skills and expertise to perform the necessary duties that are being asked of them by the leader. They also must be committed to the task, and

    Four leadership theories have been outlined and analyzed in this paper. It is evident that many theories of leadership exist with overlapping qualities from these leadership theories are integrated by successful leaders in various organizations, as leaders adjust to their various leadership styles.     First characteristic is authentic leaders pursue their purpose with passion. To be authentic, leaders have to know the aim of their leadership. Leaders who lead without a purpose can easily fall prey to greed and the desires of the ego.     Contemporary leadership plays a very important role in today's rapidly changing nature of organizational environment. Contemporary leadership is designed for managers and leaders who want to become self aware and highly effective leaders in today's environment. There are two theories of contemporary leadership which has the common theme. They view leaders as individuals who inspire followers through their words, ideas and behaviors .These theories are charismatic leadership and transformational leadership. Charismatic leaders articulate an appealing vision which provides a sense of continuity for followers by linking the present with a better future for the organization. The leader then communicates a high performance expectations and express confidence that followers can attain them. This enhances follower self-esteem and self confidence. Next the leader conveys, through words and actions a new set of values and by his or her behavior sets an example for followers to imitate. Finally the charismatic leader makes self-sacrifices and engages in unconventional behavior to demonstrate courage and convictions about the vision of the organization. On the other hand transformational leaders are those who inspire followers to transcend their own self-interests and who are capable of having a profound and extraordinary effect on followers. These leaders pays attention to the concerns and developmental needs of individual followers, they change followers' awareness of issues by helping them to look at old problems in new ways; and they are able to excite, arouse and inspire followers to put out extra effort to achieve the goals of organization. Organizations are increasingly searching for managers who can exhibit transformational leadership qualities. They want leaders with visions and charisma to carry out those visions so that the organization can achieve its goals in today's global competitive world.…

    Good leadership is important in any organization. A successful leader is one that is effective in his decision-making in regards to the vision, the strategy and motivation of others, which is necessary in leading.
