Conquering My Fear of Swimming
“Conquering My Fear of Swimming”

Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to swim. I was always afraid of the water, but I decided that swimming was an important skill that I should learn. I also thought it would be good exercise and help me to become physically stronger. What I did not realize was that learning to swim would also make me a more confident person. This later on would be a great benefit to me in anything new I would try to do and make any new experience less stressful and scary. New situations always make me a bit nervous, and my first swimming lesson was no exception. After I changed into my bathing suit in the locker room, I stood timidly by the side of the pool waiting for the teacher and other students to show up. After a couple of minutes the teacher came over. She smiled and introduced herself, and two more students joined us. Although they were both older than me, they did not seem to be embarrassed about not knowing how to swim as I would have been in their situation. Once we had introduced ourselves to one another we got into the pool, and the teacher had us put on brightly colored water wings to help us stay afloat. One of the other students, Lisa if I remember correctly, had already taken the beginning class once before, so she took a kickboard and went splashing off by herself. The other student, Tim if I remember correctly, and I were told to hold on to the side of the pool and shown how to kick for the breaststroke. One by one, the teacher had us hold on to a kickboard while she pulled it through the water and we kicked. Pretty soon Tim was off doing this by himself, traveling at a fast clip across the short end of the pool. Things were not quite that easy for me, as this was the first time I had tried to learn how to swim; but the teacher was very patient with me. After a few more weeks, when I seemed to have caught on with my legs,

Some people think that the butterfly stroke looks like an easy swimming stroke with both arms coming out of the water at the same while gliding their body over the water, but they are wrong. It's actually one of the most difficult strokes. When my heat of swimmers was called for the event of the 50 yard butterfly, I stood behind the start block getting ready to swim butterfly and to do my best. The announcer then gave us the signal to get up on the starting block. Once everyone was on the block they said, “Take your mark”. As I got ready to get into the start position. I relaxed and slowly gripped the bottom of the block tightly, then positioned my foot one over the edge and the other behind. Then as I got ready to jump off I lunged forward…

It was about 10:00 and it was time for our free period when we were allowed to go down the slides, the diving boards, or just swim on our own. Three of my buddies said they were going to go off the high dive, I was too shy to speak up about being afraid. I knew it was too little too late now I had to face my fears and just jump. We got in line, and it was as if I was in a trans just staring at everyone climb up the ladder and without hesitation jump and plunge into the icy water. Before I knew it I was on deck and I could feel stomach churning a little bit, as if on cue I heard the splash of Sam and knew it was my turn. I grabbed the metal bars and slowly made my way to the top, I felt like I was a mile off the…

Also knowing that a person can swim 100 meters was crucial, due to the fact that in a total distance of snorkelling around the bay, a person would have swam further then that distance. Also knowing that the persons physical fitness was up to standards, was reassuring and comforting not only for our supervisors, but ourselves and friends. It was very important to know wheather or not somebody could or couldn't swim this test, as the pool conditions would have been a lot smoother then the natural currents and waves of the…

In the dive I create a streamline position so that I can make a clean entry into the water, this will limit the splash at the point of entry into the water allowing me to swim a faster length. Whilst I wait to dive of the board I must make a specific pose with body so that I can enter the water quickly. The first position should be made before a signal has been called out, I should have my fingertips touching the tip of the board, one heel should be in contact with the board and the other foot should be placed at the back of the board. When a signal has been called to signify the start of the race I should balance my body weight towards the front of the board. I believe that my reaction time to the signal is also one of my strengths as I react very quickly.…

Swimmers also require a fierce determination. A strong will, so when the going gets tough, the tough get going. You have to make a conscious effort to work on your stroke form, your turns, your touches. Every swimmer knows that the last stroke can make or break a race. You may think you tied the swimmer next to you, but in reality they touched a sixteenth of a second before you. In swimming, every second counts. My coach hammered into me that it wasn’t you against the swimmers in the other lanes, it was you against the clock, you against yourself. After about a year or so of swimming, I started ignoring everyone in the other lanes. From the second I heard the bell, to the moment I touched the wall, it was me against myself. It was me, pushing myself as hard, and as fast and far as I could go. To me, if when I finished the race, I could pull myself up out of the pool right after I finished, I didn’t race hard enough. But those times when I would race a 200 yard sprint, by the last 50 yards, I felt like I was pulling lead. But I would just think,…

One of the main workouts that we did was that we would start submerged in the pool and we would have to jump on top of the top stair. At the beginning, it takes several attempts to jump on to the top stair because it requires a colossal amount of strength and focus to jump on it. Another thing that we worked on was learning how to control our breathing. Usually, we would do “tuck jumps” for two minutes and then we would immerse in the water. The goal was to stay under the water for as long as you possibly could.…

I recall the feeling of my eardrums popping, a quick stinging sensation, and then quickly grabbing my nose and blowing out as hard as I could to equalize the pressure in my ears. I was now sitting on the bottom of a 20 foot deep pool, minimal air left in my lungs. As I rested at the bottom of the pool, lungs beginning to burn, I was not nervous or worried about my situation. I loved the water, it is where I am the most comfortable. I had done this multiple times, swim as deep as possible, relax for a few seconds, and then slowly glide back up to the surface. However, this was the last time I would do this because the next day I left to join the Air Force. The point of my story is not to tell you about my hobby for diving, but of how I welcome uncomfortable and difficult situations, adapt to them, and then overcome them with ease. Chaos begins when you allow yourself to lose control of the situation at hand. Yet,…

I started swimming for a APSC in 2003. In the club, each level of lessons were a different sea animal, the first level was the tadpoles. When we learned everything there was to know in the level, we went to the next one. There were the otters, salmon, orcas, trout, and more that have slipped my mind. I stayed in the club until I was twelve, and the coach who taught me at salmon level, was teaching the pre-team group. She got mean and made us all get out of the pool every time someone was fooling around or messed up. I found it ridiculous so I…
