Concepts of a Motivation When it comes to motivation you would expect that a supervisor be the last person to motivate you, but what if you had that one cool supervisor who did everything all wrong but made working so interesting to the point you looked forward to each shift. There are things most employee look for when it comes to a job, is it fun to be at work, can I enjoy working extended time with a supervisor always watching me, can I relate to him or her, will she fire me if I mess up, things like that run through your head especially when it is your first job. The text describes a motivation as anything that provides direction, intensity, or persistence to behavior.(McGraw-Hill Irwin pg333) I choose to interview a person I believe to hold and demonstrate motivation when I first got hired at the age of 15 years old at Arby’s restaurant in Auburndale as a cashier on drive thru and lobby. Sharon Coleman was the first person who gave me a job while I was in high school and I felt there wasn’t any person that displayed more motivation at work than she did to ensure we had a great time working for a fast food establishment. Sharon is someone who showed many qualities of a someone who you viewed as a motivator, she joked constantly with the employees and customers made it enjoyable to run a business at the same time showed professionalism when it came down to business. Many people think motivation as being someone who uplifts you but don’t realize you can always motivate people through rewards, encouragement on certain task, aiding when help is needed, the type of energy you bring to a workplace and many more. When you get the most out of your employees you see a difference in performance at work, satisfaction of coming to work, the balanced you have to ensure everyone is kept in line when it came down to it, and helped when needs where needed to be met.     One theory of motivation is equity theory. “The essence of the theory is that perceived inequity is a motivating state---that is, when people believe that they have been inequitably treated in comparison to others, they will try to eliminate the discomfort and restore a sense of equity to the situation” (Lombardi, 2007, p.284) .     “Motives are sometimes defined as needs, wants, drives, or impulses within the individual and are directed toward goals that may be conscious or subconscious.” (Hersey, et.al 2008) A working definition of motivation can be “giving a reason to act: the act of giving somebody a reason or incentive to do something” (www.bing.com) It is important to have a working definition of motives or motivation before creating a plan for it. Motivation or the motives of someone will always depend on the individual, their perceptions, their needs and their beliefs. When a person’s perception is skewed, their needs high and their belief of what can be done that is when trying to motivate them in another direction is difficult. A leader is able to meet someone where they are, understand their perceptions, needs and beliefs and guide them into a new understanding in order to meet their needs and ultimately change their beliefs; in order to motivate them. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (1943) states that everyone has several levels needs beginning with a person’s physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. In a shorter version motivation is a reason why people do something, it is an extremely complex issue. Because not everybody can be motivated, because it must come from within an individual too.     What or who is a leader? The Army defines a leader as, “anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals.” (FM 6-22, 2006, par. 1-2) So, how does an officer become a good leader? There are three tools, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Multi-Source Assessment and Feedback (MSAF), and Individual Development Plan (IDP), that all officers must use in taking steps to become a good leader. The MBTI is designed to help individuals understand how they perceive the world and make decisions. It was developed by Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. They based their findings on theories proposed by Carl Gustav Jung in his book “Psychological Types” published in 1921. The MBTI provides four pairs of preferences or dichotomies that make up a personality type (www.wikipedia.com). The preferences look at the individual’s focus of energy (extraversion (E) – introversion (I)), way of perceiving (sensing (S) – intuition (N)), way of judging (thinking (T) – feeling (F)), and focus on the other world (judging (J) - perceiving (P)). A combination of one element from each these pairs make up a personality type (i.e. introversion-sensing-thinking-judging (ISTJ), extraversion-intuition-feeling-perceiving (ENFP), etc.).
