Comparing The American Dream In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun
A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is a story about a family whose continues to struggle while reaching towards the American Dream. The American Dream is described as “the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” The Youngers are a hardworking family who all have different interpretations of the American Dream. Mama, Walter, and Beneatha’s shared powerful dreams that give the a look into the American Dream. Through hardships, exciting moments, and fighting between the family gives a look that not all dreams are easy to reach, but it gets achieved one way or another. The first character who is able to overcome obstacles in order to achieve her version of the American Dream is Mama. Mama wanted her family to be happy. She wants them not to have to worry about money. Mama recently received a $10,000 life insurance check due to her husband's passing. With this money she puts a down payment on a house for everyone. Mama thought everyone was going to be very happy about this decision. Everyone was pretty excited, except for walter. Mama said “No . . . something has changed. You something new, boy. In my time we was worried about not being lynched . . . You ain’t satisfied or proud of nothing we done. I mean that you had a

The three characters that I mentioned above were all strong, hard willed people that did not believe in giving up. It gives a good life lesson to anyone reading the book that if you believe in something, reach towards it. Eventually you will reach that goal or you'll come close enough to satisfy yourself. the American Dream is a very broad idea that was brought up back in the early 1930’s. Every person had a different perception of what this dream was, but no matter what it was in your eyes, everyone still wanted to achieve
