If I were to compare Phantom of the Opera to another story, that would be, the story, The Beauty and the Beast, because the main character in two stories share the same attributes. Thus, Belle and Christine both find fascination about darkness. Both are ambitious, in a good way. They love things which are mysterious; they learn to see beauty behind ugliness.
