My first step into my high school was followed by four others. These four other people were my Big Sibs, the people who welcome freshmen students to my high school and help dispel the fear of entering high school. They had nurtured a warm and supportive community during my freshman year that inspired me to fill their shoes in and help others after they left.
I became a Big Sib during the end of my sophomore year. Since then, I have helped build a world where my Little Sibs have learned to appreciate instead of fear stepping out of their comfort zone. As a result, in the seventh floor room where we meet weekly, I’ve built a family where everyone can reap the benefits of different backgrounds, whether in age, interests, or culture. Just last year, my Little Sib Jackie was uncommunicative like I used to be, jarred by the transition from a small middle school to an enormous high school. During homeroom, I introduced him to others, eventually breaking down his barriers. I also founded the Research Club during my sophomore year, a club committed to fostering interest in science. After conducting real scientific research and working with a mentor that poured hundreds of hours of training into me, I became more confident and felt inspired to contribute back to the community that I came from. Now, I spend my time every Friday after school teaching underclassmen lab techniques and helping them find answers to their questions outside of the
