Compare and Contrast of Us and Turkey
The Western style of education has gained popularity over the last decade. Many Turkish students come to countries like the US, Canada and Australia to study at an university and improve their employment prospects. As I am one of them, I gained 13 years experience in Turkey and also currently living in America, I had a chance to see the similarities and differences between United States and Turkey. In this essay, I will briefly compare and contrast study, homesickness and culture in US and Turkey.

In addition both countries have private and state schools. The students can choose one of them and can have a good education. American students have the opportunity to be an exchange student in other countries. Similarly, Turkish students have the chance to be an exchange student. American citizens attach importance to their religion, just as Turkish citizens do. The American folks go to the church every Sunday. Likewise, Turkish people go to the mosque every Friday. Both have homesickness when they live, work, study abroad. A final similarity is that Turkish and populace in the United States have respect for their culture and they try to keep their culture alive. American folks celebrate Christmas ever year, just as Turkish public celebrate Ramadan.

In spite of these similarities, there are a lot of differences between study, homesickness and culture in US and Turkey.

Turkey’s culture is radically different from that of the US because the American nation are mostly Catholic and Turkish population are mostly Muslim. American people believe in the Bible, in contrast Turkish public believe in the Koran. Tuition fees in the United States are very expensive unlike tuition fees in Turkey are very cheap. This fact depends on the quality of education because the western education system has been teaching in a better system than Turkey. The United States government gives importance to the education. However, Turkey government has been working to change the law

Four years ago when I first left my home and embarked on this journey to pursue a more progressive American education, I encountered the most arduous adversity of my life. For the first time in my life, I had to cope simultaneously with academic challenges, cultural shocks, language learning, and reorienting myself in a new social space. This preliminary study of cultural adjustments for international students in America has been a long-anticipated topic of interest for me since the very first day I arrived in America.…

Mustafa Kemal’s impact on the modern Turkish state is irrefutable, so much so that he was given the name Atatürk by the national assembly, meaning “father of the Turks”, banning anyone else from using this name. Turkey, one of the few culturally Islamic nations without a Sharia legal system , is often referred to as one of the most modernized states with a Muslim majority . Atatürk is often attributed with the modernization of Turkey, through, amongst other things, social, political and economic reform. Kemalism, the founding ideology of the republic of Turkey, was a series of extensive programs of reform aimed at modernizing Turkey through six pillars, referred to as the six arrows of Kemalism, namely nationalism, republicanism, secularism,…

Comparing two countries from completely different sides of the world, it is easy task. Two different cultures, different people, customs, and behaviors, but also a lot of similarities. Poland knows as a heard of Old Continent with deep roots in European culture. From the other side we have United States of America pretty young country, with people that valuing freedom and their social rights. People can think those two countries are completely different, but besides differences there is also a lots things those countries have in common. First thing that Poland and United States have in common is this same chain - food restaurants. Driving through the typical Polish city downtown people can find American fast food restaurants like Mc Donald's, KFC, Burger King, and Pizza Hut. Too bad people in United States cannot find some of Polish restaurants with good traditional food. Second similarity between European country and United States is a lot of the same TV shows in Polish television. During watching Polish television people can have see the same commercials typical American products like Pepsi and Coca-Cola, and American TV shows like "Dancing with Stars", "Big Brother", "American's got talent", "American Idol", and also American TV serials like "Dexter", "House", "Heroes", "Desperate Housewife". Another similarity is that Poles and Americans valuing very high their families and hard work. Family is very important in both countries, people spending a lot of free time with own families. Trying to raise children, and be good wife and husband. To support families they are spending many hours working hard and making money. Those are three things that make Polish people feel like home here, and still feel like in US when they are home.…

I was surprised at how similar Norway and the U.S. are. Now, don’t get me wrong they are complete different nations with different governing styles and beliefs, but that’s what surprised me about the similarities. Both countries struggle with teens being on the phone a lot, and Norway is very patriotic just like the U.S. Norway’s teenagers are just like us which was apparent with the person I interviewed who was a teen from Norway but had also spent two years in the U.S. He said his favorite food was (homemade) pizza rolls, which I’m sure many teenagers in the U.S. would love as well.…

Politcal similarities were that both drew influence from western Europe: the Ottoman, during the Tanzimat era of reorganization and Russia used western models as references to revise their Judiciary court. Another similarity was that both launched reforms for political matters: Au Ottoman leaders launched reforms by the command on of the sultan/leader because they wished to repair the strength of their lands (military-wise). Russia also wished to strengthen their empire after the Crimean war , so they focused reforms to build stronger politically.…

Collectivism is the degree to which people work together in groups and it is measured on group achievement. Individualism is the degree to which people work independently and is measured on personal achievement. Canada has a very high individualism and a very low collectivism. In contrast to Turkey whose collectivism is high and individualism is low. In societies like Canada there is a strong sense of competition. People expect from each other to fulfill their own goals and people have unattached relationships with one other people (Hofstede, 2009). In Turkish society family stands at the center of life, family members are highly trusted. Children are taught to help out the family and not to be independent. In Canadian society family is important but children are taught to be independent. In Turkey the family is always there to help out the children whenever they are needed, but in return the children are expected to take care of them when they get old. In Canada parents are there for their children until a certain age, where children become independent and start working on their own. In Turkey older brothers are responsible for financing the younger siblings through school and when a time comes for weddings. In Canada everyone is responsible for their own finances. In Turkey Personal problems are solved by the help of the family, and the elders arrange marriages for the younger. In Canada personal problems are solved by yourself and you have the freedom to choose whoever you want to marry. In Turkey most businesses are family owned and the top management consists of family members rather than professionals. In Canada companies are more willing to hire someone outside of the family than in Turkey. In Turkey belonging to a group is very important whether it be an educational, religious or social group. In Canada group membership is not as much of significance as in Turkey because our society promotes individualism. In Turkey people…

    Turkey Study Tour

It was an eye opening experience for me to participate in study tour with new friends from USA cohort as we spent four days explored Turkey together. Through this study tour, we were able to meet with and pick the minds of great individuals in Turkey. I am especially grateful for having the opportunity to experience Turkish hospitality, culture, government, education, business, arts, media, history, religion and their people first hand. This is something that I cannot find in “Lonely Planet” travel advises. Turkey is a country where history (Ottoman Empire, Artutuk) and religion (conservative fashion, cuisine, architecture, call to prayers five times daily & etc) play a big role in shaping today’s Turkey. It even impacted their ways of lives and daily conduct. There is some similarity with Asia but still a difference. Beside what I can take away from Turkey, study, learning and interacting with USA cohort spice up the learning experience. They brought me to think from ankles I never think before and definitely help to open another door of learning. These two things are things that I can take away and no one else can take it away from me. My perception towards Turkey and American are making a big turn and I must say I like this positive change.…

Educational system of Turkey is directly controlled by Ministry of National Education (MEB) in terms of constructions curricula and their implementations in school. The Ministry of Education creates common curricula and makes all school in Turkey obligatory to apply these curricula by checking schools’ and teachers’ documentations (Halicioğlu, 2008). In addition these curricula are national based content since Turkish educational system aims to ‘raise all individuals as citizens who adopt, protect and promote the national, moral, human, spiritual and cultural values of the Turkish Nation’ (1). Therefore International education programs have not a significant place in Turkish educational system, while some private schools in Turkey offer and implement some international programs as an alternative/auxiliary education program beside to Turkish National Education. One of these educational programs is International Baccalaureate (IB) program which is offered by 28 schools in Turkey. Only one school out of 28 schools is a state school (Istanbul Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Turhan Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi); others are private schools.(2) This shows that IB is applied by mostly private schools in Turkey.…
