Compare And Contrast Grant And Lee
Bruce Catton wrote “ Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts” and had it first published in The American Story in 1955. He contrasted Grant and Lee in various ways; one way was that Lee had values of family and tradition. On the other hand, Grant had values of progression. Lee strongly believed in having an aristocratic government. Grant was on the opposite side and believed that a democracy was the better type of government. Lee had fought to keep the people and society, from where he lived and grew up in, the same. Grant, on the other hand, fought to help the society as a whole to continue progressing forward because that is what he believed, in complete honesty, was the best for everyone. There were also similarities between the two generals;

    This quote is important because it allows me to understand the similar perspective that Matthew Antoine and Grant Wiggins have on what it is like for A black man in the south. Matthew seemed to have regretted staying in the south and not being anything or anybody there. Grant however, struggles with whether or not to stay or escape his roots and home. Both of the men appear to be bitter and cynical of the way they are treated unfairly. This Piece of advice was given to grant by his old teacher, before he died.…

    It was the late 1600’s and people of strong religion in Salem, Massachusetts were becoming oddly stricken by recent events regarding the practice of witchcraft. Through this period of time twenty people were executed due to mere assumption to have been involved in witchcraft or Devil worship. Living through these events and making accounts of them were two men by the names, Cotton Mather and John Hale. Both Cotton Mather and John Hale, influential Puritan Ministers, were supporters of the Salem Witch Trials which took place for two years between 1692 and 1693 and, had both written two very influential pieces detailing them, Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" and, Hale's "A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft". Through similar and contrasting rhetorical style and device the two proved their separate messages of the trials, Mather's being that the…

    The movie Gods and Generals is a portrayal of the actions that were illustrated very eloquently and captivatingly in the book Gods and Generals, written by Jeff Shaara. The movie even though was less than mediocre in its appeal was full of accurate historic facts. All of the battles, Manassas Junction, Antietam, and Chancellorsville, all occurred. The battle at Manassas shows the Federal troops clearly running from the Confederates, although it does not show the "audience" that was present that day. Chancellorsville was also an accurate representation. Also the characters were all real generals and their roles and actions in the movie were true to real life. The characters personalities are also accurate with all their religious beliefs as can be seen through the book version, which is said to be a true depiction of the characters. However, one historical inaccurate segment of the movie was the scene where ‘Stonewall' Jackson was shot by his own men at Chancellorsville. In the movie they dramatized it to quite vast degree. The movie showed his men to shoot him unknowingly and to continue shooting at their own men, unaware of who they were. In truth they stopped after the first shots because they recognized who it was and were greatly shocked and horrified at what they had done. (Gods and Generals the book, pg 440) The characters in the film are all real. The Northern men are not shown much. Only Capt. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is portrayed, leaving out General Hancock, a major player in the beginning of the Civil War. This causes questions about there importance and if they were fighting for the "proper" reasons. A lot is left to the imagination about the North. The Southerners are all…

    Samson and Casey were two foolish men who made bad decisions. God gave Samson strength beyond human ability as long as he followed Gods rules, but Samson could not put aside his arrogance and lust in order to keep his gift. So God took his gift away and in the end Samson paid with his life. Casey was talented at baseball but his pride led him to miss a great opportunity which made people revaluate how great he actually was. They were both over confident which lead to their downfall. Solomon warned men about this very sin because he knew what damage it could do. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) The most disappointing component of both their actions was the fact that they had others depending on them. If their pride had not gotten in the way then they could have accomplished something great. They let people down and by their actions, displayed cowardice.…

    The main characters of both stories are similar because they both take risks. The author doesn’t directly explain Rogers life, So the reader must infer it through his actions. For example, roger tries to steal Mrs. Bates purse about ¨11 at night¨, Roger goes for the risk of stealing her purse. A boy who comes from a responsible family doesn´t go around stealing peoples purses. Similarly, the Sniper is smoking a cigarette in the middle of war "Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, inhaled the smoke hurriedly and put out the light" (Flaherty). The man is making a bad decision. He doesn’t care that he is at war he still does…

    The childhood of Robert Edward Lee played a pivotal role in the way he would see the world as a man. Lee was born into an aristocratic family of Virginia with a deeply rooted American history. Richard Henry and Francis Lightfoot Lee, Robert E. Lee’s uncles, helped draft resolutions that would lead to the Declaration of Independence, both would sign it1. Lee’s father, Henry “Lighthorse Harry” Lee III was a revolutionary war hero and one of George Washington’s most dependable fellow countrymen. In 1771, Washington, also from Virginia, wrote: “ I know of no country that can produce a family all distinguished and clever men, as our Lees.”2…

    Lee, who is from Virginia, had very traditional and old fashioned beliefs. He strongly believed in the idea that having unequal, leadership, and social categories provided an advantage to society. The Confederacy embraced Lee as their leader as well. Furthermore, Confederate soldiers considered Lee the symbol of everything for which they had been willing to die for. On the other hand, Grant was raised very differently from Lee, his father had been a tanner on the Western frontier, and he was brought to be a hardworking man and to make something of himself. Grant primarily focused on democracy and believed that no individual was born into any type of class. Moreover, he believed that society should have privileges that each man should win for themselves and not just have privileges because you were born into an aristocratic family. He is seemingly the complete opposite of Lee in his belief that each person has the ability to work hard and gain their own good fortunes. Grant believed in a balanced social structure that did not limit anyone to any particular fate. He believed that life was a competition and everyone should get the chance to reach their limits. Grant had a more modern outlook on life and Lee would rather live in accordance with the past. Also, Lee and Grant were most different when it came to loyalty. Lee saw himself very much in relation to his own region. He was brought up in a static society where change was not known. Therefore, his loyalty would only be to the society in the location he lived and would…

    Harper Lee was a strong early reader and similarly so was Scout. “As a child, Harper Lee was an avid reader, similar to Scout 's own ability to read before starting school.” (To Kill a Mockingbird). Another thing that both Scout and Harper Lee had in common was they were both tom boy rule breakers. “As a child, Harper Lee was an unruly tomboy. She fought on the playground. She talked back to teachers. She was bored with school and resisted any sort of conformity” (The Big Read). Just the same Scout fought with Cecil and Francis. Both Harper Lee and Scout live in a town’s that are very representative of each other.…

    As Catton observes, Lee came from a “privileged” class from which “the county would get its leadership.” “He embodied a way of life that had come down through the age of knighthood and the English county squire.” Lee came from the noblest elements of tradition and “chivalry” living in a “static society.” Everything happened to the country because of the higher class giving it “strength” and “virtue.” Even more so, he believed to not be one with the nation himself, but “the Virginia aristocrat, inevitably, saw himself in relation to his own region”. He felt tied to the region he lived in; he fought to preserve the way of life he had known. “Back of Robert E. Lee was the notion that the old aristocrat concept might somehow survive and be dominant in American life.”…
