With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. Nonetheless, there are so many issues that are worth to be noticed and concerned, whether it is about the environment or animal welfare. Volunteering can definitely help you see the world m different perspectives for the betterment of society.
On 23d November 2014, I volunteered for the Charity Run 2014 organized by UNICEF. I worked at the assembly point, which is the Hong Kong Disneyland Car Park. My time as a luggage keeper was rewarding. It allowed me to see how different people with different race all participated in the Charity Run to raise fund for the mothers and children affected by AIDS, either as a volunteer or a runner.
I was assigned to take care of the runners’ luggage and belongings during the run. There were four persons in each line. Each line was responsible for 200 runners. At first, the whole operation was chaotic. With so many people queuing up, we got panicked. Some identification numbers were recorded wrongly. After about 15 minutes, we started to pick up the pace by dividing the job among ourselves. Two persons were in charge of placing the bags on corresponding units. The other two took care of marking down the runners’ numbers. We did not have much rest at all. It became even more tumultuous when people came to retrieve their stuff and some came to check their luggage for another race. We managed to organize everything and I was very proud of myself.
As a teenager in Hong Kong, studying seems to be the only thing that we should be focusing on. Adults keep telling you that you need to work hard in order to go to a good university and find a well-paid job. However, education is more than academic work. New model of learning also emphasizes on all-round development. Extracurricular activities are important parts in our life journey. Through volunteering, I learn a lot of new things that broaden my horizon.
On top of that, my volunteer experience really

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

Being a nominee, I realize that the National Honor Society is an honor to be in itself. Since The National Honor Society is dedicated to helping the needy, children, the elderly and non-profit organizations. I feel that this is the right society for me because since I was a child, I have been noted for my exceptional empathy. My parents have always instilled in me a sense of responsibility and care for others. I feel obligated to utilize my gifts in an organization as prestigious as the National Honor Society. I have been involved with Girl Scouts for 8 years and through that experience, community service and many hours spent volunteering have become very meaningful to my life as well as taught me many things that I will use throughout my life. I have volunteered countless hours, but out of all of the work I have done, my Girl Scout awareness project has had the greatest impact not only on the community, but on myself as well. For my project, I had hoped to bring reckless and drunk driving awareness to the community to help out the parents who have lost children themselves to this issue, and to show teens that getting behind the wheel intoxicated can be extremely hazardous. Being a teenager myself and witnessing fellow classmates pass away due to this issue, it breaks my heart to know that the cause of their death was a couple of alcoholic beverages. My project was to show students the risk of their decisions.…

I had no intention of becoming involved in community service. As a high school sophomore, I was required to complete five hours of volunteer work in order to join the National Honor Society. I cleaned and organized bookshelves at my local library, and that was that. Over the next year, I volunteered with school cleaning, dance set-up, and other events not out of graciousness or compassion, but solely to maintain my NHS membership. However, as a junior, a teacher nominated me for the United Way Youth Board of Baldwin County, Alabama. Youth Board, an organization designed to encourage volunteer work among adolescents, completely changed my perspective and fostered in me a passion for community service. With this organization, I was able to collect children's books, install free libraries around my community, organize a food bank, and raise both monetary support and awareness for the United Way. As well, it inspired me to start knitting preemie hats, become a lead volunteer at my local library, and…

Community service in its ideal form is a way of doing something positive for the community. When everything in the community seems to be breaking, families falling apart at the seems, economic leaders telling us to prepare for a loss of economic will, I get upset and I ask myself have we really arrived at a true and lasting definition of what community service really means. I have helped feed the homeless on many occasions through many different church groups. Very much have I enjoyed providing Christmas presents for families in distress. I’ve been part of highly organized community services like coaching troubled youth in roller hockey. This was what I knew and what I could offer to my community because I had the opportunity.…

Volunteering and providing services to the community in which I reside is extremely imperative to me, because of this I take as many opportunities as I can to help out. Of all of the hours I have spent volunteering, one service in particular stands out the most. A few years ago I was invited to volunteer at my town's local nursing home, I was skeptical at first, but I proceeded to accept the offer anyway. The date arrived, my group and myself entered the nursing home where we were welcomed with warm, kind smiles from all around. No one expected this, and from that moment on I knew that day would hold a special place in my heart. Both employees and residents seemed beyond gracious and thankful to have us there, and because of this, we all felt…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…

    * I define volunteerism as a service performed for the benefit of others with little or no benefit to the person carrying out the service. One may volunteer for many reasons but these should not include expecting to receive an income or publicity for work being done. One benefit that a volunteer may have however is growing their knowledge base about the activity in which they are participating. One should think about the ways which they can make their community a better place to live for themselves and everyone else. It’s really not that hard, carrying out simple actions like helping an elderly person to cross the road or donating your unworn clothes to persons who have a greater need for it can be classified as volunteerism.…
