communication skills
'The ability to communicate well is the most important skill for managers'. To what extent do you agree with this statement?
In contemporary business environments, communication skills are utilized in all levels of management. Some people think that there are other skills as important as communication skills. However, communication is the most critical and wide-spread skill in management. This essay will argue that while other skills such as problem solving & decision making, technical skills and team management skills have their respective merits in the management process, the successful performance of all these skills cannot be achieved without good communication. It is true that communication plays an important role in management, but some managers argue that communication is not the most essential skill which they should have. Instead, some practical skills, such as problem solving and decision-making skills, technical skills and team management skills seem more crucial in daily management. Problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential for identifying what needs to be solved and determining adequate solutions (Horsley et al. 2000, p. 7). Additionally, in each department of an organization, and at all levels of management, employees are required to possess technical skills, for example, when they use computer software or prepare budgets (Dwyer & Hopwood 2009, p. 8).
However, decision making and problem solving skills are also vitally important for management to achieve goals. Horsley (2000, p.7) illustrates that the responsibility of management is explaining and defining the problem which needs to be resolved and discussing future results or goals. In fact, supervisors also need to communicate decisions, interview employees and manage time and other resources. In terms of decision-making, problem-solving is the preparatory step. That is, managers should have the ability to make decisions from different possibilities (Horsley et al. 2000, p.7).
