The topic of Common Core preparing students for college and their careers is a topic of recent interest for both the author and the audience for many reasons. One reason is because common core is the way many students are taught in schools today. Another reason is because the author and the audience may both have the same opinion that common core is not preparing students very well for college or their career. The purpose of the popular article is to talk about the gaps between some core standards and what college instructors think is important for students. Strauss talks about how there is a gap between the Core standards in school and what colleges and professors consider important for the curriculum (Strauss, 2016). However, the scholarly article In Defense of the Common Core Standards by Joshua Bleiberg and Darrell West talks about how Common Core is setup to define what all students are expected to know and be able to do. Common Core sets standards that every student should know how to do before they continue onto the next grade. Many people question the way the standards were written and the content of the standards, and many people say it has never been proven to improve the academic ability of the students (Strauss, 2016). The article The Problems with the Common Core by Stan Karp states that there are concerns that teachers found with the Common Core practice . Karp states in the article that Common Core was a better developed curriculum rather than what they were teaching with (Karp,2014) . They said it seemed more flexible and student centered. In the article The Problems with the Common Core it says how it is based on many different claims. One claim is that it will help require more progressive student-centered teaching with strong elements of collaborative and reflective learning. Strauss noted that many teachers continue to teach certain math concepts because they think it is important for students to learn and they are not included in the curriculum.
Chester Finn’s scholarly article The War Against the Common Core talks about how Common Core will not make any difference in student achievement and may cause an unacceptable level of student failure (Finn, 2012). The standards do not boost achievement for the students. Finn also states that it does not carry failure rates either.
