Imagine someone being 17 years old with a few months left until high school graduation and on their own with the future to think about; that person was me. I decided that I was going to wait a couple of years before I went back to school and I really wish that I wouldn’t have. If I wouldn’t have waited, I would already be done with my degree and making good money. Students should attend college immediately after high school to better their education, achieve independence, and earn higher wages.…

Claude Brown was born in 1937 and raised in Harlem--that district of Manhattan north of Central Park between Eighth Avenue and the East and Harlem rivers. His parents had moved up from South Carolina in 1935 and settled in a tenement at 146th Street and Eighth Avenue. Included in the family were two girls, Carole and Margie, and two boys, Claude and Pimp. The Browns were among the first of the waves of black migrants who left sharecropping farms in the South to come to the urban North. To these people, moving to the North meant a better life--a life in the "promised land." Claude--or Sonny, as he was called by his family and friends--spent his preschool days battling other boys in the streets of Harlem. He was encouraged to do so by the lifestyles of the street people. He was adopted as a mascot for an infamous Harlem bebop gang, the Buccaneers, and later became a member of its stealing division, the Forty Thieves. By the time he was ten years old, he had been in and out of New York's Children Centers and had been expelled from school several times. His parents reacted in two ways: His father tried to beat him into changing, and his mother pleaded with him, believing that Claude had been "born with the devil in him." Hoping that Claude would do better away from New York, his family sent him to live with his grandparents in South Carolina. During…

A few math’s that would be useful for your physicians’ career include calculus one and two and linear algebra. You must also complete “four years of Medical school.” Each Medical school has their own math requirements. There are several fundamental reasons why students all over the world choose to pursue higher education: to broaden their knowledge base, to achieve financial independence, and to be a part of an environment that fosters personal growth. I truly believe that the best way to accomplish these three goals is to fully immerse oneself in a stimulating environment, where there is an abundance of opportunities to grow both during and after college. I am currently a second-year student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and I spent my first year of post-secondary education at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). I am highly interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, but my current institution only offers…

Before cancer, I was a stellar student who, with little effort, excelled in academic arenas. Since cancer, assimilating and disseminating information has been more difficult. Chemotherapy caused extensive damage to the regions of my brain that process memory. Nevertheless, I have persevered. With each new day, I move forward with my academic career. There have been roadblocks and setbacks, but it doesn’t matter, I crave learning and do so with fortitude.…

There comes a time in a person’s life when they need to start thinking about their future. Of course, kids tend to think about their futures from an early age. We’ve all wanted to be princesses and ninjas, pirates and fairies, superheroes and singers. But there’s a time to start thinking about your future reality-wise. In the modern era, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a job without an education past that at the high school level. While college is set up as a luxury, it’s evolving into a necessity. College is something I definitely see for myself in the future although not for the same reason. Personally, I would like to be able to learn about what I want to do and learn how to do it to the best of my ability. Going to college…

To say that I dedicated numerous amounts of hours deciphering the purpose of why I’m going to college would be a lie. For years I have always thought that college is somewhere you just go after high school. I believed that it is only somewhere you go to start your career and in turn make a lot of money. In fact, this “purpose” is what has been institutionalized within U.S. citizens under this Capitalist system. We are told to go to college so we can get jobs where we can make money, buy a big house, start a family, and live the lifestyles we have always dreamed of. For a very long time this was my only goal in life: to go to college so I can get a well-paying job to afford the lifestyle that I want to live. I never put much thought into what…

Neither of my parents graduated from college, I am the first in my family to earn an associate’s degree. I chose to pursue my college education despite pressures from my working-class family to just work instead. They wanted me to avoid what they view as a costly and unnecessary expense and to stay out of debt in order to avoid the money-problems they faced. At HCC, need-based grants covered my tuition, but I hope that with scholarships like the ones UT offers, I can afford to finish my degree and inspire my six brothers and sisters to pursue thier college education.…
