Charles Spurgen Johnson was the son of Charles Henry Johnson a Baptiste minister. They were pretty much lucky to be a little more upper class .Charles Spurgen witnessed a lynching at twelve years of age from intoxicated white men. He watched how his father stood alone brave and didn’t feel threatened he was a role model for his son as well as many other African American. This line stood out to me from the reading “Muse” “Johnson thus grew up with both a deep hatred of racial injustice and an understanding of the limits of individuals bravery in confronting it”. This part stood out to me because most African Americans weren’t brave enough to stand up for there right the they feel they were beneath these people. As far as his son…

Rebekah Nathan, a professor at AnyU and author of "My Freshman Year", looks into the life of a college undergraduate student. Nathan's primary methodology was participant observation (p. 5). By going from being a professor to an undergraduate student, the little things had to change. She turned into a piece of the field work, needed to utilize individual exposure, and needed to lose objectivity in order to stay focused and on track with her research. Nathan came across a few difficulties along the way due to her choice of methodology and the fact that she was much older than the average college undergraduate student. However, going through the challenges she had to face lead her to some discoveries about students of the college while also living as a student herself.…

It is a pleasure to nominate Dave Giles for the "Most Outstanding Person" award. He is a former alumni of Carl Sandburg College. My first impression of Dave came in 2012 when he gave hands-down the best speech on the importance of education that I had ever heard. He truly enjoys spending his time helping the community's youth. He has also continued to live up to that impression of being a passionate man who is optimistic, supporting, and is as committed to children as he is to bettering our society.…

Andrew Delbanco, the author of the article “College at Risk”, supports the idea of “lateral learning”, where the “students have something to learn not only from their teachers but also from” (223) other students. He claims that education should be about more than the pursuit of marketable skills. “But for many more students, college means the anxious pursuit of marketable skills in overcrowded, under-resourced institutions, where little attention is paid.” (225-226). The author also supports the idea of smaller class sizes, which costs more money, so that more attention can be paid to the students. I understand why he believes in smaller college classes, but since I come from a low middle class, I don’t agree with him. Although smaller classes…

In this essay that came from Caroline Bird’s book “The Case Against College”, she claims that most students that are in school not because they want to be, but because it is now the thing to do or to get away from their parents. (Bird 647) She also goes on to say a little later essay that she notices when she goes on campus that the students look sad. She says, “I have been overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses”. (Bird 469) Birds has very good arguments, from how expensive college is, why a lot of students fail out of class, to letting high school graduates make up their minds on whether or not they want to go to college or not.…

Both Wes Moores’s family, were very important to them. They both loved and cared for their family dearly, and tried to do they best they can for them. Wes 1’s family deserves credit for gearing him in the right direction. I feel if Wes’s mother, Joy, didn’t care so much about her children’s education he wouldn’t be where he is today. She cared so much they moved and changed schools. She knew kids in public school didn’t care and weren’t good influences on Wes. He got into a fight with some kids and then after was talking to his uncle. He got into the fight because the kids said Wes had changed. And his uncle replied, “The problem isn’t that you changed, its that they haven’t.” I really like this quote because it says so much about Wes as a person. He worked hard and became better then the neighborhood he lived in. I admire Joy’s determination to get the best for her children. Wanting them in a better school to escape where they live. It led him to move on with his life and accomplish a great deal. When someone is encouraging you to do better, it builds your confidence and lets you believe in yourself. Wes’s family believed in him, so he could believe in himself.…

A successful student is also one who understands and accepts their own powerful role in achieving success. Successful students see themselves as primarily responsible for their outcomes and experiences, meaning that they are often self-motivated, self-advocating, and self-disciplined. Sue Dunkle, a long-time teacher at both private and public institutions, notes that her most successful students are those who live by a poster hanging in her classroom: “You are responsible for you!” These students, realizing their responsibility, use self-discipline to overcome procrastination, initiate and follow-through with tasks, sets goals and achieve them, actively participate in class, develop strong relationships with teachers, and even manage their…
