Coach Carter is a 2005 film directed by Thomas Carter. It is based on a true story, after the Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter portrayed by (Samuel L. Jackson) made headlines in for benching his undefeated team the Richmond Oilers due to poor academic results. This was a great movie that illustrated several styles of leaderships and mentorship. Coach Carter display, transformational leadership, authentic leadership, and motivational leadership style. Coach Carter was a great leader and coach, who encouraged his team and pushed them to be the best they could possibly become. Many of the characters are seen in a negative light at the beginning of the film however as the film progresses Coach Carter leadership style show how he influence his students in overcoming adversity and transform them to be become winners on and off the field. Some of the main themes in this film is the importance of leadership, unity, discipline, and education.
Leadership Movie Coach Carter (2005) Film
Transformational leadership is a process that changes and transform people. It is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals. It includes assessing followers’ motives, satisfying their needs, and treating them as full human beings. Transformational leadership involves an exceptional form of influence that moves followers to accomplish more than what is usually expected of them. It is a process that often incorporates charismatic and visionary leadership. (Northouse Sixth Edition 2013). This relates to Coach Carter because at the start of the film one of his student, Timo Cruz was so adamant not to follow the rules of Coach Carter which leads him dropping out the basketball team. However later on within e film you see Cruz wanting to come back to join the team and to prove to Coach Carter that he has changed and will do anything to prove to coach carter to get back on

    He coached them on life and in turn, impacted and changed their lives forever. One of the people whose lives tuned around because of the Coach’s influence was Kenyon Stone. Coach Carter believed in him by telling him that he had a very good chance of getting into a good university with a basketball scholarship. This got him thinking about his future - his pregnant girlfriend’s too and how having that baby was going to weed all chances of her going to college and having a better life for herself. Kenyon took responsibility by thinking about what he really wanted for his life. He learned that even though it is hard to come to terms with certain issues, you do it so that you do not end up in regret. Before, Kenyon only lived by the day; a reckless life of staying at his girlfriend’s house until the evenings and then going back home or staying late at parties. He realized that Kyra (his girlfriend) had a cousin whom, at the age of nineteen already had two kids and meagre jobs.     In the movie, Coach Carter, it is seen that the coaching style of Carter differs from most. In order to be eligible to play for the Richmond basketball team, the players must follow a strict regime outlined in a contract that they are to sign. Some of the rules are that each team member must maintain a 2.3 GPA, be seated in front of all their classes, and wear a shirt and tie. As it is obvious, most coaches do not have such set of rules. Most coaches only require that the players show up for practice and that’s it. Looking closely at his method of coaching, there are both positive and negative aspects that surround it. Firstly, his rule of ‘all students must be seated in front of the class’ is perceived as a positive aspect. In the movie, it was said that Richmond had a very low success rate. Only 50% of students graduate from Richmond, and the majority of those were girls. This shows that the other half either stay back, or don’t pursue a higher education. With this rule enforced among the players, this will enable them to focus more in class as they will be closer to the teacher allowing them to understand what is going on in class. This will ultimately benefit them as they will be able to graduate and not be part of the 50% who stay back. Carter also required that the players maintain an average of 2.3.…

    In 1971 in Alexandria Virgina, at the desegregated T. C. Williams High School, African American head coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to lead the school's football team.     Coach Ken Carter is offered a job to coach the basketball team at his former high school, Richmond High, where he was one of the best athletes to ever attend a secondary education there. He took the job to bring change into the poor neighborhood of Richmond but more importantly the student athletes on their basketball team. He made the athletes sign a contract outlining that they will only be allowed to participate in games if the players attend all their classes and practices, maintain a C average, wear a tie and suit on game days, and respect all their teammates and coaches. Coach Carter used a variety of ways to lead and motivate the team to get them on their way to the state championships undefeated. Although he noticed from the progress reports that most of his athletes were doing poor academically, violating the contract the athletes signed at the beginning of the season, so he took immediate action. To get the attention of his athletes, school, and community, that the first word in the term "student athlete" is "student", he locked the gym and cancelled all the games until his athletes showed improvement in their grades. This caused huge commotion and made the athletes, the school, and most of the community extremely mad. After long debate whether the lock should come off or not, the school board decided to open the gym doors and continue the season. Coach Carter did not support the message that "basketball players or any athletes are above the law", he wanted to guide them to success in the future so they do not end up like most kids from Richmond, in jail or died.     Ken Carter is a coach and on the other side he is also a father. As a coach, he is responsible for his team players so that they have a contract that even though they are players they still need to go to their respective classes because Coach Carter still gives prioritize for their study. At first some of them agree and few of them disagree with him. Ken Carter shows that he has true faith in these students and their success, even when the students have the deepest doubts. As an education student at Wayne State, I was taught this statement: “The Effective Urban Educator: Reflective, Innovative and Committed to Diversity.” That statement describes Coach Ken Carter 100 percent. Reflective teaching involves analyzing what you do in the classroom, why you do it, and if this method of teaching works. It is a process of self-observation and self-effectiveness. In this movie, Coach Carter noticed that some of the students’ grades were either failing or close to failing. He reflected on what he can do as a Coach in order to help these students succeed, not only on the court, but in the classroom as well. He decided bench his undefeated team due to their poor academic results. (This is a form of punishment for the students’ receiving bad grades. They were put in a “time-out”.) Although the students were upset over this doing, they were forced to bring up their grades if they wanted to continue playing basketball. Innovative teaching means bringing new methods of learning to the classroom that will benefit the students. Coach Carter did that on the basketball court for his students. He taught the students important plays that will lead to success on the basketball court, and he also took his coaching to a higher level by forcing the students to do better academically in order to do the one thing they love the most: basketball.     Moreover, they acted their roles well in order to bring the character out. There were two characters in this film that has captured my attention, and enabled me to feel what each role really is thinking and feeling. The character that has the greatest impact on me is the protagonist of this film, Coach Ken Carter, played by Samuel L. Jackson. He portrayed himself to be a person who is filled with determination. Despite knowing that the players were hard to handle due to their bad attitudes and disrespectful behavior, he was determined to make a change from the start.
