Character Analysis Of Coach Carter
Coach Carter is based on a true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his team that there is more to life than just playing basketball, and it is brought to screen in a sports based drama. Thomas Carter directed this movie and it was released in 2005.
This film is about Coach Ken Carter, who takes the job of coaching the Oilers basketball team at Richmond high school, where he was from and was once a champion athlete for 2 straight years. When Coach Carter began training his players, he was disheartened by their poor attitudes and dismal play performance. Moreover, they acted their roles well in order to bring the character out. There were two characters in this film that has captured my attention, and enabled me to feel what each role really is thinking and feeling. The character that has the greatest impact on me is the protagonist of this film, Coach Ken Carter, played by Samuel L. Jackson. He portrayed himself to be a person who is filled with determination. Despite knowing that the players were hard to handle due to their bad attitudes and disrespectful behavior, he was determined to make a change from the start. The school and community were also unhappy at him for closing the court and leading the players to the library to focus on their studies; however, he remained in his stand and explained that they should make a change in them and not just using past statistics to show that the boys could not perform well academically. Due to his determination, he has succeeded in being a good Coach and has gained respect from everyone. He is also a good motivator to his team. He has guided the team through their ups and downs, during tough and difficult times. When they were feeling down for not winning the state competition, he lifted their mood up by encouraging them and letting them know that they had done their best, and that’s what is important, not winning that is important; it is the teamwork and team spirit. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” As stated ‘Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us’ has specifically taught me not to be over confident and look down on others even in times of victory as it may also be a turning point that leads to our downfall . It also tells me that I should embrace my failures and work hard to make a change.
“You said we're a team. One person struggles, we all struggle. One person triumphs, we all triumph.” is said by Jason Lyle in this movie. I feel that it is a really meaningful statement as it has taught me about teamwork and great team spirit. We must always support each other through good and bad times, and this is what keeps the team closely
