Clorox Household Cleaner Lab Report
Paragraph 1 In experiment 2, the statistical analysis of data collected showed that Clorox Household Cleaner was not significantly different than the Clorox Toilet Bowl cleaner. This is due to the fact our calculated P-value was 11.45%, which is larger than the 5% maximum allowed to us to be able to support the alternative hypothesis. This indicates there was not support for our alternative hypothesis, causing us to reject it. In doing so, we had to accept our null hypothesis. Our Null hypothesis states the Clorox Household Cleaner will not inhibit E. coli bacteria more than the Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner.

These sources of uncertainty could have had major impacts on the data we were able to collect. The quality of swabbing conducted on each plate couldn’t be the same for every single plate, and that showed in our results. One of the plates had insufficient E. coli bacteria growth in a region of about 1/3 of the plate size. Because of this, we did not get an accurate reading of the inhibition zone for one of the discs in that area, changing our data. Another source of uncertainty is if the paper discs were placed in the right locations. One of the discs was supposed to have a rather large inhibition zone and instead it was very small. Because of this, we question if it was placed right, and again, it changed the data we were able to collect. The last source of uncertainty for our experiment was how long the plates were uncovered in the swabbing and disc application process. If they were left uncovered for an uncertain amount of time, it would impact how the E. coli bacteria would have grown on the plate. In addition to that, if there were some other sort of air born microbe that could have landed on the plate, it could impact how the E. coli would

    The unknown project was a very good realization of me and my partner going out by our selves. The very first day of the Unknown project I was acquainted with Denise who was very friendly and was very nice as far as assisting me in the project. The first day we were introduced too various different forms of the unknown such as broth, Blood agar plate, MSA plate, MAC plate, and the EMB plate. Before that we had done the 3 phase isolate which we had a possible of 10 points of achieving. In the isolation plate we had too take the sample of our unknown, which was the letter G. After we had done the 3-phase isolation plate we inoculated half of the plate, which was the S/D media. The Plate’s that we had provided too us were the BAP, MSA, MAC, and EMB. When we were successfully inoculated the S/D media the plates were put in the Incubator at approximated 37 degrees Celsius. The second day we had came into the laboratory we had too read the Nutrient Agar plate that was the one that we had too the 3 phase isolation plate. My results were somewhat correct but I had a lot of backtracking. After that we had too read the S/D Media, which we had, too diagram and describe each of the plates that we had put in the incubator. Once they had come out of the Incubator the results that I had achieved was the MSA plate was yellow, stinky, I did have growth, there were a positive match for small colonies, and was shiny. The second one that I had achieved was on the MAC plate. The color on this specific plate was red, it had smelled rotten, there was definitely some growth on the plate the texture was shiny and was not raised.     The objective of this experiment was to identify an organism from a mixture of two unknown bacterial species. In order to accomplish this, I first plated my unknown mixture on Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), Columbia Naladixic Acid (CNA), and MacConkey’s Agar (MAC) plates. After 48 hours of incubation, it was unclear that two different bacterial colonies had grown on my TSA plate. Only one type of colony was evident. However, it was apparent that I had successfully isolated two different bacterial species by examining my MAC and CNA plates. Only one type of colony had grown on my MAC plate indicating a gram negative species, which I chose to be organism A. Similarly, only a single type of colony had grown on my CNA plate, indicating a gram positive species, which I chose to be organism B. By performing a gram stain on the two colonies I was positive they were two different species because organism A were gram negative rods in single arrangement and organism B were gram positive cocci arranged in irregular clusters. I ran a catalase test on both organisms; organism A was catalase positive while organism B was catalase negative. I also performed a cytochrome oxidase test on both organisms; again, organism A was oxidase positive while organism B was oxidase negative. Then I decided I would run the biochemical tests on organism B. I observed that organism B was non-motile and did not produce endospores. With these results, I narrowed down the possible species to Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Lactococcus lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Pediococcus parvulus, and Streptococcus mitis.…
