Clinical Rotation Reflection
My clinical rotation at White Memorial Medical Center was a memorable experience for me. The nurses that I was assigned to or shadowed were very kind with sharing their experiences as well as their knowledge when it came to taking care of children. My first day at White Memorial Medical Center, I was lucky enough to be picked by the charge nurse named Robbie at the PICU. She picked two more students to shadow her nurses. She had four patients ranging from ages 3 months to 15 years of age. I had a patient that was diagnosed with BRUE (Brief Resolved Unexpected Event) formerly known as ALTE (Apparent Life-Threatening Event). Our professor Ingrid Roberts let us choose which patient we wanted to care for that day and to make sure that nurses assigned had a student nurse shadowing with them. There were 12 patients that day and only three nurses available. I was able to listen to Resident Physician doing their rounds. I was able to go with my nurse and the patient who needed an Upper GI exam to the Radiology department. I did a physical assessment and focus assessment on a female adolescent post-surgery for cellulitis right thigh. I also experienced doing a physical assessment on a preschooler who had appendicitis but ruptured. I collected urine, made sure I recorded I & O’s properly, and also monitor any sign of infection for the post-surgery patient. I was able to use therapeutic communication technique to a patient who was having Upper GI examination. She was crying non-stop and wanted to vomit the contrast. I feel that I was born to do this, this is my calling, and my passion. I experienced many things that I did not think I was able to do. I have cousins younger than me, however, I was not around to take care of them or even babysit them. I truly respect all the nurses who do this and not just for the money but you can truly see how they care for the patient especially children when it is not their own. To have a professor like Ingrid Roberts, who was there for all the students even though there was a lot of us, she made sure she gave each students the equal attention needed. She was there to answer our questions, guide us with our care plan, and double checking our charting. I truly enjoyed and made me feel productive when I go home from the hospital. I was smiling ear to ear even though I was on my feet the entire 12 hours shift. I did not feel tired or exhausted, more of
