Christianity And Islam Similarities
Christianity and Islam are considered extremely different religions, yet have a number of commonalities. The similarities suggest that the two religions are derived from corresponding ideas but the beliefs majorly conflict; including their origin, divisions, nature of god, rituals, and salvation.
While the word Christianity is derived from Greek origin, specifically the word christos translating to ‘appointed,’ Islam comes from the Arabic word for ‘submission’ and ‘peace.’ The origin and translation of these words are related to the foundation of the religions. Christians believe that their God sent his one and only son to the earth to save humanity from their sins and be the ultimate sacrifice, as exhibited by carrying and being nailed on the cross, which is why ‘appointed’ is appropriate. Christian rituals include sacraments, like baptism and communion. In Orthodox and Roman Catholicism, five more rituals are added: Confirmation, Marriage, Penance, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the sick. Prayer is also an important part of Christianity, but is not regarded as a ritual. Islam, however, has a very specific ritual outline, including Shahada, or a profession of faith; Salat, or praying five times every day; Zakat, or giving; Sawm, which is fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan; and the Hajj, or pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca. Not every Muslim performs the Hajj, but Sawm, Zakat, Shahada, and Salat are important pieces of the religion. Lastly, Christians believe salvation is achieved by grace through faith in Jesus, and know that being baptized or taking communion does not grant them salvation, or a spot in heaven.
