Choose the Best Software Package: Material, Capacity Requirement and Enterprise Resource Planning
As part of the management team at PPQ Parts, I have been charged with selecting the best software packages for several of the firm 's needs. These needs include materials requirement planning (MRP), capacity requirement planning (CRP), and enterprise resource planning (ERP). Before we can choose among the various software programs, we need to first identify the needs as listed above. We can begin with MRP. This is basically a planning system for production that is used for planning new projects. MRP also helps with controlling inventory as part of the system, and may be used to maintain manufacturing details within the system proper. Although the majority of MRP is performed electronically by computer methods, it is possible to plan for materials by hand. There are three main points for materials planning systems, and they must be met simultaneously. Of course, the system must make sure that the materials are available to meet the needs of production and delivery to those who have ordered them. Furthermore, the system is meant to help maintain the lowest conceivable amount of supplies within the storehouse. Lastly, the quality system is meant to indicate the necessary methods for manufacture, delivery, and even purchasing as needed. Fortunately, there are prepared software suites to accomplish these tasks. One of the solutions is by Epicor software. Epicor realizes that manufacturers are under a great deal of pressure to produce quality merchandise in a consistent fashion. Economic fluctuations and market governance and compliance mandates add to the complexities manufacturers face every day. Striving to reduce costs and increase profitability while remaining competitive is no easy task (Epicor, 2012). Epicor also produces an ERP solution as well. The price range for Version 9.0 is about $4,000-$500,000. This large range in price is contingent upon the amount of users as well as the platform that is chosen by the company. The positives of this system are that

Each of the four Riordan Manufacturing offices is utilizing different software programs to manage their manufacturing, distribution, and inventory. This type of environments provides very little functionality. The efficiency of this is also overwhelming because each plant in essence is not communicating with each other over one system. All of this makes it difficult to track accurately inventory, generate meaningful reports, respond to the information requests from stakeholders, and to…

Materials Requirement Planning is an integral part of any manufacturing based business. According to The Free Dictionary’s definition of materials requirement planning is that this system “provides the user with information about timing (when to order) and quantity (how much to order), generates new orders, and reschedules existing orders as necessary to meet the changing requirements of customers and manufacturing” (2009). This definition of materials requirement planning illustrates the importance of having an excellent system in place to make certain that ordering needed materials is done in an orderly fashion that allows for the needed materials to be on hand, but will not result in an instance of having…

Riordan Manufacturing has requested assistance to provide specific recommendations for improving their inventory system. The objective for this service request is to analyze the current processes in inventory and define business requirements for system upgrades and improvements. Business requirements were established using a set of metrics to evaluate three options for improving inventory practices at Riordan. The three options evaluated are Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP), Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), and Vender Managed Inventory (VMI). The metrics allowed the three systems to be scored based on the priority of business requirements, which provided the basis for recommendations to Riordan. In addition to using a metrics table to evaluate the three systems, the evaluation team utilized a Gantt chart to develop implementation timelines for project management, assessment, hardware/software installation, user training, and software support. Riordan Manufacturing advised the consulting team of their constraints of a one million dollar budget with a one year implementation deadline. The team also completed an analysis of the return on investment (ROI) for the MRP solution. This analysis proved that the MRP solution would greatly reduce inventory costs for Riordan. Taking into account the business requirements and parameters set by Riordan, the consulting team can make a recommendation.…
