Chinese Cinderella Book Review
Cinderella is an autobiography about Adeline Yen Mah’s childhood, starting in 1941. Throughout the book, Adeline explains her childhood in which she faces many dilemmas. She also describes how she was made to feel unwanted and unloved by most of her family. The story is set in World War 2, during the time period when the Japanese had invaded China. In the story, Adeline explains the amount of respect that all of the Chinese people had to show towards the Japanese. When Adeline was just four years of age, the Japanese were already marching into Tianjin, China (Adeline’s hometown) and were demanding to become her father’s business partners. For this reason, Adeline and her family fled to Shanghai, a large port city just north of Tianjin.
Adeline’s mother died giving birth to Adeline when she was only a year old. Her father remarried two years later to a half French half Chinese woman who was only seventeen years old. At this time, Adeline’s eldest sister was only six years old. Later on in their marriage, Niang and Father had two more children, Fourth Brother and Little Sister who were treated well, unlike her stepchildren. There were then seven children (five from father’s first marriage and two from his second marriage). Niang loathed Adeline and all through her childhood she tried her best to be make Adeline’s life a misery. Her stepmother makes Adeline feel like she is a piece of garbage and in Adeline’s own words 7she describes herself as ‘ugly, I loathe myself’. When Adeline is sent away to boarding school by Niang, Niang concentrated on making Adeline feel forgotten by the family. Her stepmother directed all letters that Adeline wrote to Aunt Baba to her which results in Aunt Baba not replying to Adeline. Overall, Niang despises

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, the girl who finds her prince with the help of a magical fairy god-mother, transforming her previously horrible life to a fabulous depiction of every little girls dream. Generations of children around the world have heard the story Cinderella countless times, however most people are unaware of the multiple versions of this legend. The European version of Cinderella ,“Aschenputtel” written by the Grimm Brothers consists of the female protagonist being treated as a servant, yet somehow manages to leave her cruel family behind for her Prince whom she lives happily ever after with. Another version of Cinderella is the Native American tale “The Algonquin Cinderella”, where the female protagonist is also mistreated by her family, however she is fortunate enough to “find” her own prince in her village. Although both stories present similar morals, both vary in details such as characters, settings, and use of magic.…

The Disney princesses have been a staple in American culture for many generations. From Cinderella to Snow White these princesses have been adapted into different stories, cultures, and forms of art. On March 17, 2017 at Moline High School, I attended the yearly musical, this year being Cinderella. As I entered the auditorium, an usher took my ticket and greeted and told me to enjoy the show, which I appreciated. The auditorium was pretty packed; however, I had gotten a reserved seat. Cinderella, Cherrie Herberg, had a warm and timid personality, which was perfect for Cinderella. She had a few times during her singing parts that could have been stronger, but overall her singing ability shone through. Cinderella really did well with the song…

Louise’s entire character is powerfully ironic in that she is the furthest thing from a mother. Mothers are expected to be of caring and affectionate nature. However, Louise neglects Isabelle-Marie and treats her like an outsider since she is physically unattractive. Louise only favors her son Patrice because he reflects her outer beauty and she feels the necessity to sustain it by only nurturing him. Since Isabelle-Marie is physically unappealing, Louise does not love or treat her in the same fashion as Patrice. Isabelle Marie finally gains the courage to express how Louise has mistreated her. She exclaims, “[m]other, ever since I was a child you adored Patrice because he was beautiful and hated me, the ugly one. Patrice always Patrice! You never realized that your son was stupid, that he was an idiot…nothing but a beautiful body” (104). Isabelle-Marie’s tone is filled with contempt and jealousy while she spills out all the emotions that she had been bottling up for years. Louise always favoring Patrice due to his beautiful face even if he was just an “idiot” exasperates Isabelle-Marie. Moreover, Isabelle-Marie’s ill thoughts towards her own daughter and disfiguring her brother’s face can be seen as the result of her mother’s intolerance and lack of love towards her. Louise’s superficiality and favoritism towards Patrice transforms Isabelle-Marie to turn into a self-loathing and destructive character. Hence, Louise can be held responsible for creating this dysfunctional family. Rather than loving her children unconditionally as a mother should, she loves them based upon their looks. Therefore, ironically, even though Louise is their real mother, she fits the archetypal character of an evil stepmother due to her discriminate, mean and evil behavior.…
