Wu Mei recounted, “While I was basking in Third Brother’s praise, I suddenly felt a hard blow across the back of my head. I turned around to see Second Brother glowering at me”(9). Second Brother thinks Adeline is overconfident and because she is Niang’s youngest stepchild, the other step children can get away with mistreating Adeline. To Niang’s stepchildren, Wu Mei is considered bad luck so when she succeeds at anything they feel the need to make her feel useless in every way. Adeline provided a detailed description of the beating of Little Sister, “Her blows landed indiscriminately on Little Sister’s ears, cheeks, neck and head. Everyone cowered as the punishment went on and on”(34). Adeline’s family has no qualms about beating their children and seem to find it the best disciplinary measure. The beating of one of Niang’s children is almost unheard of which frightens the mistreated step children especially Wu Mei. Aunt Baba and Ye Ye were the only people in Adeline’s life who wanted the best for her and believed she would…

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” (Albert Einstein). This quote especially applies to the main character of Chinese Cinderella, Adeline. Many people gave her the impression that she was worthless, but some believed in her. In the memoir Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline has a very tough childhood. However, her grandfather, Ye Ye, and her aunt, Aunt Baba, continuously support her, and Adeline would not have risen above her abusive childhood without them.…

In September, after the summer holidays, I was basically pleading for Adeline to come to my birthday party, which is why I was so excited when Mrs Wong told us that the following Tuesday would be a special holiday. On the day of my party, I got ready early and waited at school for Adeline with my chauffer. All morning we played with dolls, and shooting basketballs and it was all going perfectly until my maid came out to serve lunch and Adeline suddenly whispered to me that she needed to leave. I tried everything to make her stay but when she left, it was hard to keep the other girls entertained because we were all becoming impatient, waiting for Adeline’s return. We decided to telephone her home but we were disappointed when her Mother said that she was too busy to take our…

Second Brother also has a very distinct personality. He is malicious to Adeline because of jealousy and everything that goes wrong for him. To support my claim, here are two quotes and why I chose these quotes. “Deliberately he took my right arm under the table and gave it a quick, hard twist while no one was looking.” Second Brother is so cruel that he hurts Adeline right at the dinner table where anyone may see him. “… you ugly little squirt! This’ll teach you to show off your medal!” Adeline’s brother openly shows that he acts maliciously not just for no reason, but also because he is jealous of the attention that Adeline is getting because of an award she…

Some of the hardships that she faced included the fact that she was not loved or wanted by the majority of her family. For example, Adeline says, “Now they know the pathetic truth! Unwanted and unloved by my own parents.” (Yen Mah pg. 116) This evidence shows the self- loathing attitude Adeline had developed because of the pressure and uncaring nature of her parents. Also, this evidence identifies that Adeline has no faith that she will ever be wanted by her parents. Another example is, “Big sister once told me, ‘Mama died giving birth to you. If you hadn't been born, Mama would still be alive. She died because of you, you are bad luck.’” (Yen Mah pg. 13) This quote explains the source of hatred the older siblings have created for Adeline. This quote is important because it shows the soul reason why the siblings resent her. Adeline had hard early years of her life because the majority of her family despised her, with the exception of her Ye Ye and Aunt…
