Childhood Leukemia Speech Outline
Lauren Greener COMM 101 Class time: 2:30-4:45___
Topic: Leukemia
Specific Purpose: To inform the class about what leukemia is, what the symptoms are, and what the possible treatments are.
Introduction:
I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphomic Leukemia at the age of two
Acute and Lymphomic don’t mean anything, Leukemia means something.
Leukemia: Just a word, to others not a word but a reality.
Before diagnosed parents were scared and didn’t know what was wrong.
Doctor and treatment.
Thesis Statement:
Today I will be talking about three aspects of Leukemia; First what it is and one of the possible causes, Secondly what are the recognizable symptoms and what tests doctors use to identify leukemia in a young child. And what are the treatments for this disease.
Signpost: To start, I’m going to talk about what Leukemia is and what some of the possible causes are.

Subordinate Point One:
According to Kids Health.org (2007), a leading educational website that informs parents of children’s health issues; says “When a child has leukemia, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow” (1). Kids Health.org also says that the mutated cells crowd the bone marrow, forcing the mutated blood cells out into the bloodstream, where they grow and multiply, and they can no longer perform their duty of protecting the body against illnesses. They also crowd out the healthy cells so that they can no longer perform their duties, like carrying oxygen to the body. Cancer.org (2009) mother's age when child was born is a possible risk factor (1). Also says Kids Health.org goes on to say “In almost all cases, however, childhood cancers arise from non-inherited mutations in the genes of growing cells.” (2007, p. 1)

    Imagine you are going to the doctor for an annual check-up. No real problems have plagued you over the past year, except a few colds. However, the past few weeks you have been extremely tired. The doctor, being thorough, decides they want some blood work drawn. A day after getting the blood work the phone rings. The doctor wants you to have more blood work done because there has apparently been a mistake with you labs.
