Childhood Asthma Letter
To the Honorable Beto O’Rourke,
Good day sir, I hope all is going well for you. I’m writing to you because I wish to ask for your
assistance with getting my re-enlistment code changed. A few months back, I was separated from the
Air Force due to the belief that I was still affected by childhood asthma. When I first enlisted, I brought
up the childhood asthma to the recruiter and I said that I haven’t had any symptoms since the age of 10
or used my rescue inhaler since I was 7, he stated I would be fine and wouldn’t need a waiver to
continue the process since it was before the age of 13. I completed the recruitment process, went to
basic and was pulled out of my third week of training and was told that my training is frozen until further

After hearing all of this, she said “Since your medical record
doesn’t state that the incident wasn’t asthma related, we’re still going to have to separate you.” I was
given the option to fight my case to stay in, to which I accepted and was told to create a rebuttal. I
waited 2 months until I finally lost my case, which resulted in my separation. However, the day before I
was discharged, I was reassured by a different Major that I would be able to re-enlist with no problem,
which was confirmed by multiple officers and instructors. I was told I had to wait a minimum of 6
months and the only thing I would need to do is apply for a waiver, or I could wait 2 years. I decided to
wait 6 months and apply for a waiver. I was told by my recruiter that if I wanted to make the process go
easier and smoother, I need to get a clearance letter from my doctor. I did so and recently tried re-
enlisting, only to find out that my re-enlistment code on my DD 214 says “4C”, which prevents me from
re-enlisting in any branch of service. I told my recruiter and asked him what it needed to say and he said
a 1 and a 3, which means I’d be eligible for re-enlistment
